“Nice to meet you, I’m Robin” — MOONDROP Robin Brief Review

This year’s TWS market has been quite competitive, with both Samsung and Apple delivering major updates. Apple introduced new noise‑cancelling features to the AirPods 4, while Samsung—unexpectedly and aggressively—released the Buds3 Pro, which in my opinion is the undisputed, game‑changing T0 contender in sound quality in the current TWS market.
Headphone manufacturers have also been pulling out all the stops. Some, despite lacklustre product performance, have thrived through aggressive, targeted marketing and low pricing—making their presence felt everywhere, and even popping up unexpectedly when you least expect them alongside AB products. Others, who have never released a TWS earphone before, have finally taken their first step this year, and they’ve made a fairly decent start.

MOONDROP started the year with the Warframe collaboration, and since then, several models — including Dream Back, Tang, Ultrasound, and MOCA — have all used more or less the same charging case and similar shell designs. While the driver architectures are completely different, the sound signatures vary wildly, and the details do have some distinctions, it’s still hard to avoid the feeling that they’ve been taking the “off-the-shelf” approach to churn out products.
That is, until they dropped a bombshell: “Everything Has Been Changed” — the Robin.
For those who have played Honkai: Star Rail, you’re probably familiar with Miss Robin, the renowned Galaxy Singer from Penacony. So yes, this MOONDROP TWS earphone is an officially licensed collaboration with Honkai: Star Rail. The entire product is steeped in Robin-themed design elements — the packaging itself features Miss Robin’s beautiful and striking face. Oh my, she looks absolutely gorgeous.

To be honest, I’m not usually keen on buying tech products that are co‑branded with game studios or anime IPs — though I do occasionally pick up official perfumes or branded apparel. The reason is simple: most of the time, these crossovers just boil down to a cosmetic reskin of an existing product.
But the Robin was different. I placed my order on the very first day of sale — simply because I could tell from the promotional material that MOONDROP had gone all out on this one. This is a brand‑new product developed from the ground up, with no corners cut: a new mould, a new charging case, a new driver architecture, and deeply customised design aesthetics. They held nothing back.
After using it extensively for a few days, I can now say with confidence: Shut up and take my money, MOONDROP. This thing is so good it barely feels like a collaboration product.

Let’s start with the unboxing. The packaging is beautifully designed, with all the elements well integrated so they don’t clash with the collaboration illustration. Miss Robin, wearing the earphones themselves in the artwork, is absolutely stunning — oh my, my Sunday brother-in-law, she looks gorgeous. Sliding out the sleeve, the pure white box features the cover art of the album Air Chrysalis Inside. She really is beautiful.

Upon opening the box, the first thing you see is the included acrylic stand. Although it only has the most basic two layers, the overall print quality and design are still quite impressive. It features the same exquisite collaboration illustration — she really is beautiful.

After removing the acrylic block, the next layer reveals the earphone charging case and the leather case. The charging case features a completely new design, unlike any previous MOONDROP TWS product — it’s a round, cake-shaped form with a slightly thicker profile, possibly inspired by a compact powder case with a built-in mirror. The case isn’t particularly compact, but its surface has a smooth, fine sandblasted finish and the base feels nicely rounded to the touch, giving it a premium feel. The top cover is fitted with a glass panel, under which the album cover of Air Chrysalis Inside is printed using a laser-etched VI process — she really is beautiful.

The bottom of the charging case is printed with the necessary regulatory markings and also indicates support for Bluetooth 5.4. Additionally, the case supports wireless charging — a feature that is still relatively rare among earphones in this price bracket.
The included leather case is quite exquisite, with a prominent grain texture that doesn’t feel particularly delicate, but is still very soft to the touch. On the top, there is a set of gold foil-stamped cursive lettering spelling out “Robin” — which, I have to say, does give it a certain premium feel. The upper and lower halves are held together by magnetic clasps. On the back, there is a precisely aligned cutout for the USB‑C charging port — accurate and perfectly positioned.

One thing to point out, though: since there’s no rigid connection between the leather case and the charging case, when you open the charging case while it’s inside the leather case, if you do it with a bit too much force or a wide motion, the charging case can get pried up and the lower half of the leather case and the charging case can slide loose. I don’t think it’s a big deal — you just push it back in. After all, I wouldn’t want the charging case to be glued to the leather case with adhesive, which would stop me from taking it out anytime I want to admire Miss Robin’s stunning beauty. Oh, she really is beautiful.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Robin.”
Open the charging case, and this is the power‑on voice prompt you’ll hear. On top of that, every operation — whether it’s pairing, disconnecting, or switching modes — comes with its own custom Robin‑specific voice prompt. The customisation is absolutely thorough.
The earphones resting in their charging slots, paired with the gold foil printing inside the case, create a striking visual: a pure white body accented with gold and purple. The overall effect is simply flawless, giving me exactly the kind of feeling I love — “I’m a fan of anime, but I’m not some silly, in‑your‑face otaku who just slaps an illustration onto a product.” It’s premium and restrained.
The earphone faceplates feature two distinct patterns: the hot‑stamped section draws from the jewellery worn by Miss Robin, while the subtle embossed pattern takes inspiration from the detailing on her outfit. The earphone itself uses a three‑layer contrasting colour scheme. The middle layer, a purple‑blue section, is produced in collaboration with Black Technology, using medical‑grade materials through 3D printing. Its unique lacquer finish gives this purple‑blue layer a deep, shifting quality — like a starry night sky — with specks that shift between blue‑cyan and purple depending on the viewing angle. In short, she really is beautiful.

This time, the Robin uses a completely different shell design from the stem‑style moulds MOONDROP has used for their previous TWS models. Instead, it takes inspiration from the custom in‑ear monitors worn by stage performers, featuring a fully redesigned shell that feels much more like the semi‑custom monitor style that audiophiles are more familiar with and prefer. From what I can see, the shell shape is quite similar to MOONDROP’s own Dusk, Blessing 3, and Kuro Ken — all models that have been well‑received in the market for their excellent wearing comfort. For me, this shell fits snugly against my concha and provides sufficient support, so there’s none of that uncomfortable feeling where the entire earphone feels like it’s being levered by the nozzle alone. And with the cable out of the way, the Robin takes wearing comfort to an even higher level.

MOONDROP has been emphasising something across many of their recent products: the depth of fit. Since everyone’s ear canals are different, the sound quality of the same earphone can vary significantly from person to person, largely due to differences in insertion depth. Therefore, by minimising the sonic impact caused by varying depths of fit, they can ensure that a larger proportion of users hear a consistent sound. Only then can they perform scientific measurements and tuning that aligns with the preferences of more listeners, ultimately creating a sound that appeals to a wider audience.
Take, for example, MOONDROP’s own Kadenz Finale, released not long ago. It offers three different nozzles of the same material and diameter, but varying lengths, allowing users to choose the one that best suits their ear canal for both comfortable fit and the intended sound MOONDROP aims to deliver.
For the Robin, MOONDROP has introduced a new design element: a “front-chamber acoustic elastic damper” placed between the driver and the sound nozzle. This adjustable component enables a more precise acoustic chamber structure, combining comfortable fit with the deep insertion depth typical of HiFi IEMs. It effectively ensures consistent sound accuracy across different users with varying ear canal shapes.

The excellent shell design, comfortable fit, and deep insertion depth lead directly to one outcome: outstanding passive noise isolation. According to lab data from MOONDROP’s R&D centre, the Robin’s passive noise isolation alone can achieve 40–50dB of attenuation in the midrange — already an excellent level compared to other TWS earphones with shallow or semi‑in‑ear fits.
The Robin also features active noise cancellation, though it uses a feed‑forward single‑microphone pickup. With the support of its excellent passive isolation, it still manages a 40dB broadband noise cancellation depth (per MOONDROP’s lab data). Based on my own subjective impressions, the overall noise isolation performance with ANC enabled is slightly better than that of the AirPods 4 ANC edition — it does a noticeably better job at suppressing certain fine mid‑to‑high frequency noise. The ear pressure sensation is also minimal, making for a fairly good ANC experience.

One point to note: because the Robin uses a feed‑forward single‑microphone setup, it cannot do what a dual feed‑forward/feed‑back microphone system can — i.e., switch off the feed‑forward mic and rely solely on the feedback mic to reduce wind noise. As a result, its wind noise resistance is indeed relatively poor in both transparency mode and noise cancellation mode.
The reason MOONDROP has been focusing on feed‑forward single‑microphone ANC is not without cause. With dual‑feedback noise cancellation, the second microphone is placed on the side of the shell that contacts the concha, which inevitably picks up the music being played and treats it as noise — causing a negative impact on the frequency response. Therefore, in order to maintain high‑quality audio and minimise the sonic differences between modes, MOONDROP has been committed to pushing the noise‑cancelling limits of what a single feed‑forward microphone can achieve.
On the Robin, MOONDROP has also tried using a smoother shell design to help reduce wind noise. So in windy environments, when using the standard mode, the combination of the smooth shell and the already strong passive isolation significantly reduces wind noise interference.

Before we talk about sound, one crucial factor that significantly influences the sound performance of Bluetooth earphones is the codec protocol. In addition to the standard SBC, AAC, and LDAC, the Robin also supports LC3 — a protocol I’m encountering for the first time. (Both LDAC and LC3 need to be manually enabled in the MOONDROP Link 2.0 app after pairing.)
After doing some research, I learned that LC3 is essentially a more efficient, sound-quality-optimised version of SBC. It can maintain the same audio quality even at lower transmission bitrates, thereby reducing power consumption. However, support for LC3 is still not fully mature across many smartphone brands. I tested a few recent phones I could borrow: a Samsung with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 could search for and successfully connect; a Xiaomi with the same chipset could find the device but couldn’t transmit audio after pairing; a Huawei device wouldn’t even detect it at all; and a OnePlus with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could find it but couldn’t establish a connection. Apparently, this is due to HyperOS and ColorOS maintaining their own LC3 whitelists — but I didn’t dig further into that. I can’t afford or test even newer phones, so I’ll just mention this briefly.
As a result, the following sound descriptions are all based on LDAC. I won’t be covering LC3, SBC, or AAC.

Let’s start with the hardware. The Robin uses a coaxial hybrid dual-driver acoustic architecture that’s quite high‑spec for a TWS. Each side consists of a 10mm high‑performance dynamic driver with a ceramic‑dome diaphragm, paired with a 6mm annular planar magnetic tweeter. The integration between the two drivers is excellent — there’s none of the severe density disconnect I’ve encountered in a certain phone‑brand TWS that also used a dynamic + planar design, where the two drivers seemed to be doing their own thing. This dynamic + planar magnetic combination is actually a first for MOONDROP’s product lineup, which backs up my earlier point: they went all out on the Robin. It’s a ground‑up development, holding nothing back — not a reskin.
MOONDROP has also equipped the Robin with three gain levels (low, medium, high). Switching between them does have a noticeable effect on the sound: high gain brings the imaging closer and makes the sound fuller, while medium gain sounds more relaxed. In my view, the real benefit of offering gain adjustment is that it helps compensate for phones with coarse volume steps — ensuring every user can find a comfortable loudness level without the annoying “one step too loud, one step too quiet” situation. Fortunately, I’m using OneUI, which allows me to customise the volume step granularity, so I don’t have that problem at all — I just keep it on high gain and enjoy.

Under the default standard tuning, the Robin delivers a sound that is technically capable, slightly warm, full and smooth, with a tendency towards the lower midrange and bass. The overall tonal character leans towards neutral and faithful reproduction. The bass is relatively relaxed, with good impact, full excursion, and rich micro‑dynamics — you can clearly feel the bass vibrations and texture, with sub‑bass extension reaching about chin level, and masking effects are minimal. Vocals are moderately positioned, full and slightly sweet, with a strong sense of richness and a touch of grain that adds a bit of character. With a dedicated planar tweeter on duty, the treble extension is never lacking — it doesn’t overemphasise the definition of note outlines, yet the overall sound is transparent, natural, clean, and free of harshness, with all the necessary details present. The lateral soundstage isn’t particularly expansive, and the sense of space and separation, while acceptable, doesn’t quite match that of wired HiFi earphones at the same price point. That said, the resolution and overall listenability are compelling enough to be called both pleasant and engaging — without any of the dry, thin, or dynamically lacking issues often found in phone‑brand TWS products.
The “Extra Bass” tuning, however, seems a bit extreme. Once enabled, the brightness of strings and other high‑frequency content takes a significant hit, and the soundstage is left with little more than centred vocals and lingering bass reverb. It might be fun for a change of pace, but I wouldn’t want to listen to it for extended periods — even though I do appreciate some extra bass, I’m not that much of a basshead.

The pop-oriented tuning doesn’t sound drastically different from the standard tuning at first listen — it also has a full and smooth foundation. However, the bass and vocals are slightly tighter and lower, and some ultra‑high frequency brightness is reduced. The overall sound becomes more vivid and full, making it better suited for ACG and pop tracks that centre around vocals. The midrange energy is further emphasised, and at times, the vocals can feel like they’re pushing forward. This works particularly well with solid pop tracks that have rather lean imaging due to abstract mixing and mastering — it can work wonders.
Yes, I’m talking about Air Chrysalis Inside. Play “Let a Heart Be Free from Sorrow” — Miss Robin’s voice is sweet and dense, with slightly larger imaging and mouth presence, accompanied by a touch of reverb and grain. The bass is solid and full without being intrusive, while the strings in the background are well separated and positioned further away, providing enough definition of note outlines and brightness to enhance the listening experience. Then I play my favourite, “If I Had Never Seen the Sun” — from the gentle narration in the first half, to the gradual firming, and finally to the complete outpouring of emotion, the entire song’s vocal dynamics and progressive layering are fully expressed. The violin and piano interweave in the background, almost as if dancing together. The emotional delivery is powerful, easily drawing me into the music. Honestly, I wonder if this tuning wasn’t specifically optimised for Air Chrysalis Inside.

The monitor-oriented tuning tightens and consolidates the bass significantly, while the treble definition of note outlines becomes more pronounced. The overall sound feels “clearer,” with much of the reverb and the cohesion between imaging elements reduced. The presentation is cleaner but less seamlessly integrated — images are more independent and separation is notably enhanced. However, the imaging itself retains a certain warmth and smoothness; it doesn’t fall into the trap of making the sound rough, dry, and lacking in refinement, as some monitor tunings tend to do.
The classical tuning is also worth discussing. The first time I switched to this EQ, I happened to be listening to a pop track with mediocre recording and mixing quality. The drastic change caught me off guard — I thought, “What on earth is this? Did my earphones break?” The vocal thickness and density were significantly reduced, sounding somewhat hollow; the lateral soundstage shrank slightly, but the vertical soundstage was considerably enhanced. The vocal imaging went from a rounded, doughy form to something stretched out like thin noodles — the definition of note outlines became extremely sharp, with sibilance even starting to show. Well, that sounded genuinely strange. I was almost ready to skip the classical tuning entirely in this review. But the next day, after discussing this EQ with a friend, I finally understood its unique merit.

The classical tuning is arguably the most aggressive and intriguing of the five EQs on the Robin. It fills the entire soundstage with reverb and harmonics — when playing purely instrumental tracks, it delivers exceptionally rich, brilliant, and crystalline overtones. Piano, strings, and orchestral sections all gain a significant boost; the instruments become more radiant, almost alluring and captivating — that’s the closest description I can come up with. The bass further loses its physical body, leaving only reverb and sub‑bass extension to lay the foundation for the music. The depth is greatly enhanced, giving the soundstage a sense of “cathedral‑like grandeur.” However, because the lateral width isn’t particularly expansive, it’s not the best fit for large‑scale orchestral works. But the shimmering string harmonics are truly irresistible — so I personally enjoy using it for film scores like Interstellar and Oppenheimer. It works for vocals too, as long as the recording and mixing are of good quality, and the singers have a bright, powerful, transparent, and penetrating voice — think KOKIA or Suara. I really like this tuning.

The MOONDROP-style tuning lives up to its name — it aims to get as close as possible to the signature sound of MOONDROP’s earlier earphones. Compared to the pop tuning, the vocals here are not as full; they are leaner and thinner, with greater emphasis on the definition of note outlines of upper‑midrange instruments — for example, cymbal hits come through more prominently, but without the exaggerated ethereality and brilliance of the classical tuning. The cohesion between imaging elements is reduced, bringing it closer to the monitor tuning in terms of cleanliness. In short, it’s very much reminiscent of the old MOONDROP sound — airy, elegant, and with bass still present. Those who liked MOONDROP’s earlier tuning will definitely appreciate this EQ.
However, with the classical tuning setting such a high bar, from my personal preference, the MOONDROP‑style tuning feels a bit underwhelming — it comes across as more “conventional.” I do understand, though, that the classical tuning has a certain entry barrier for many consumers, so it makes sense to offer a more accessible tuning for broader appeal. I’m just a little bit sorry to see that bar lowered.

Finally, let’s talk about the customisation options. As a TWS earphone, aside from the built‑in EQ, codec selection, and phone‑system tuning differences, the only remaining variable is the eartips. I used to wonder why MOONDROP made the charging case so thick — was it really just to mimic a compact powder case? Then I swapped on a pair of extra‑long eartips — the Azla Origin — and found they still fit inside the case and charged without issue. That’s when I realised: they’d left a generous amount of space inside specifically to accommodate longer eartips.
The Robin comes with two types of eartips in the box. The default ones are the oval‑shaped tips that MOONDROP has been using on their TWS models for a while. The downside? They don’t allow for a deep enough insertion, so the sound is somewhat constrained — the bass masking effect is quite strong and lacks body. The upside? They’re white — and they look good.
For a noticeable improvement, I’d recommend swapping to the Clear Springs eartips that are also included. These tighten up the bass, preventing it from bleeding into the midrange and treble, which brings the imaging into focus and improves separation. However, for my personal taste, the reduction in treble and sub‑bass quantity is a bit too much, and the vocal depth takes a hit. Still, they’re a definite step up from the default oval tips.
For those who want to experiment with eartips, my top recommendation is the Azla Origin mentioned earlier. Their longer nozzle significantly enhances the spatial presentation — the sound becomes more three‑dimensional and layered, and the formerly weak depth is no longer a limitation. Separation and imaging body are also well preserved. If you’re comfortable with the deeper insertion, I’d say this is the closest you can get to the ideal sound from the Robin.
Another solid option is Final’s short‑stem E‑type tips. They offer two key advantages: the tonal balance is similar to the Clear Springs, but they actually add depth to the soundstage and make vocals sound fuller and richer. They deliver more bass quantity and better preserve the ultra‑high frequencies, all while maintaining a comfortable fit.

Second, it’s available in purple.

Although the Lizer Lab eartips are rather unconventional in terms of both price and fit, and their sound compatibility is generally not great, they actually seem to produce a fairly harmonious result when paired with the Robin’s Classical tuning. The reverb and harmonics are further enhanced, and the vocals — thanks to the added reverb — don’t sound as thin. It’s actually quite an interesting listening experience.
Another option is JVC’s newly released FX12 (I’m not sure exactly how new it is — I only recently found out about it and just got a pair). These eartips deliver deeper and more solid sub‑bass extension, bring the vocal imaging closer and enlarge the mouth presence, and offer a wider lateral soundstage compared to the older FX10, while also pulling out a decent sense of layering.

In summary, while the Robin is marketed as a collaboration product, it feels more like a flagship TWS that MOONDROP has disguised under the skin of a co‑branded release — while quietly pulling out all the stops. It brings together the best TWS design and hardware MOONDROP has developed to date, including the comfortable shell design, the persistently refined feed‑forward single‑microphone ANC, the strong codec support of LDAC and LC3, the clean and smooth app experience, and the well‑executed custom Robin voice prompts. At the same time, it also draws on the robust driver technology and acoustic design from their wired earphone lineup — using the same diaphragm material as the 499‑yuan Aria 2, integrating a planar magnetic tweeter, and employing a front‑chamber acoustic elastic damper for precise acoustic chamber tuning. The three‑step gain adjustment offers distinct sonic variations. It even incorporates several convenience features that bring it closer to phone‑brand TWS offerings — wireless charging, optical in‑ear detection and auto‑pause, dual‑device connection (though not available with LDAC and LC3), a low‑latency game mode activated by four taps on one side, a noise cancellation mode that holds its own without compromising sound quality, a usable transparency mode, and five distinctive EQ presets. All these elements come together without any of them feeling like a compromise.

Even setting aside the Honkai: Star Rail and Robin IP, this is still a standout flagship TWS in its own right. It delivers robust sound quality while maintaining excellent aesthetics and solid practicality — and at this price point, it packs an enormous punch in terms of value.
And that’s not even mentioning Miss Robin herself. Oh my, she really is beautiful.
