MOONDROP Edge 2 Wireless Noise-Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones Experience – TDS REVIEW

This is the sixty-ninth product from MOONDROP to appear officially in the TDS Hearroom.
The release cycle between the Edge 2 and the original Edge is exactly a year and a half. During that time, an increasing number of audio brands have entered the active noise-cancelling headphone market. You can see several leading IEM manufacturers launching wireless noise-cancelling headphones in the mid-range price bracket, making the original Edge appear somewhat less prominent. The Edge 2 is positioned slightly above both the Edge and the Edge Singer, while delivering noticeable improvements across the board—from sound quality to noise cancellation—bringing it back to the top tier of mid-range wireless headphones.

Package & Accessories

The packaging of the Edge 2 is still quite large, but the sleeve has some new touches. First, there is a large cutout on the front, directly revealing the large laminated colour art card inside—yes, it is also a new MOONDROP Yuki merchandise. The internal accessories include a carrying pouch, a USB‑C to USB‑A adapter, a USB‑C to USB‑C cable, and a USB‑C female‑to‑male extension cable. These two cables serve both as USB‑C direct digital audio cables and as charging cables. The carrying pouch is the same as before—a thick leather one, relatively durable.

Design, Fit & Acoustic Structure

In theory, the Edge 2 is available in four colour options, but at launch, only two have been released for now: “Very Black” and “Very White.” The “Very Black” version, as shown in our original Edge review, is primarily a deep dark grey, paired with black headband padding and ear cushions. “Very White” is one of the main highlights this time—the shell surface and the outer headband are all a pure, high-saturation white with no obvious warm or cool bias, while the remaining parts, including the brackets, leather trims, and buttons, are black, creating a strikingly high-contrast look. We are also quite interested in the red version and will check it out once it becomes available. The shell surface still features a skin-friendly coating.

The basic structure is largely consistent with the previous generation—a fairly compact over-ear design, with the earcups tilted at an angle to better match the shape of the ear. The materials, however, have seen a noticeable change. The brackets and hinges, which were made of aluminium alloy on the original Edge, have been upgraded to stainless steel using MIM (Metal Injection Molding) technology on the Edge 2, with a sandblasted surface finish. The feel when adjusting the headband and hinges also offers more distinct stepped feedback, showing improvement over the previous generation. The Edge series supports both folding and flattening, allowing for compact storage.
Each side of the headband offers approximately 2.5cm of adjustment length, providing reasonable adaptability for larger head sizes. The headband surface is covered with a fabric layer that resists dirt, and the inner padding is relatively thick. Thanks to the overall lightweight design, the pressure on the top of the head is not particularly noticeable during wear.

The ear cushions feature a contoured, almost 3D‑tailored design, with thick inner padding and ample internal volume. Unless you have particularly protruding ears, you’re unlikely to feel any contact with the ear cavity. The foam has high slow‑recovery properties, so in practice, it accommodates glasses quite well. The clamping force on both sides is moderate, providing a certain sense of envelopment.

Control &APP

All controls are integrated into a single physical button area on the side of the right earcup, with the same operational logic as the previous generation. From back to front, the buttons are: noise cancellation mode toggle, volume down, playback control, and volume up. The four buttons have a consistent feel, with short travel but clear tactile feedback.
Two sets of voice prompts are available by default, and the prompt volume is adequate. This generation also adds capacitive wear detection—a feature rarely found in the lower‑to‑mid price bracket—and it is highly responsive. The pause‑on‑removal reaction is very quick, while after putting the headphones on, there is about a one‑second grace period for adjustment, making it a perfectly serviceable wear detection system.

The Edge 2 still relies on the MOONDROP app for various adjustments, including firmware updates, STI presets, PEQ, noise cancellation mode switching, and codec selection. However, button customisation is no longer available, which is understandable given that the headphone already has a sufficient number of physical controls.

ANC, Transparecy & Call

First, passive isolation. Compared to the original Edge, there is no fundamental difference—it remains adequate. The active noise cancellation offers three selectable modes. The first is “Basic Noise Cancellation,” which can be understood as the standard noise cancellation mode. In this state, its suppression of steady‑state low‑frequency noise is relatively decent, though it does not represent a generational advantage over the Edge. It sits at the top tier within the Headband Fine Level—higher than the Edge, yet still somewhat short of the flagship noise‑cancelling models. Its most significant improvement lies in frequency bandwidth coverage. While the Edge already had respectable bandwidth coverage for its time, the Edge 2 pushes this further, delivering very pronounced attenuation in the primary vocal frequency range—comparable to several previous‑generation noise‑cancelling flagships, and its effective bandwidth even holds its own within the Skyline Level.
The other two modes are Anti‑Wind Noise and Adaptive Noise Cancellation. The Adaptive mode can be thought of as a deeper noise cancellation mode, similar to the approach used on the Pudding. It offers some adaptability to external noise, though subjectively, when switching from Basic Noise Cancellation, the change is not immediately obvious. When ambient noise levels are high, its theoretical peak attenuation can pull harder than the basic mode. In real‑world scenarios like shopping malls or subway commutes, the Edge 2 in Adaptive mode delivers noticeably more aggressive attenuation of mid‑to‑low frequency noise. However, in quieter environments such as libraries or cafés with light background music, the perceived difference between Adaptive and Basic modes is minimal.

In terms of ear pressure, the basic noise cancellation mode handles it very well—almost no discomfort. However, the adaptive noise cancellation mode introduces a slight sense of ear pressure due to its deeper noise cancellation peak. As for wind noise, in both the basic and adaptive modes, only side and rear‑side wind sources produce noticeable wind noise, with the adaptive mode being slightly more affected—suggesting that the adaptive capability does not extend to wind noise scenarios. There is a dedicated anti‑wind noise mode, but it only offers a modest reduction rather than complete elimination. Regardless of the mode, wind from directly in front or behind does not pose a noticeable issue.
The transparency mode is fairly natural, though you can still perceive a slight high‑frequency roll‑off in the ambient sound reproduction. Fortunately, there is no exaggerated peak in any single frequency band that would compromise naturalness or long‑term listening comfort. The wearer’s own voice does come across with a slight sense of occlusion, but it is perfectly adequate for normal conversation. The Edge 2’s transparency mode actually ranks among the better implementations in the mid‑range noise‑cancelling headphone segment. With transparency mode enabled, wind from directly in front or behind does not produce significant wind noise, though side‑on wind remains quite noticeable.
For call quality, with beamforming and an integrated NPU, the Edge 2 delivers better voice pickup than its predecessor. We tested it in carrier network environments, and the default microphone volume is moderate, with decent clarity and acceptable occlusion. Noise reduction intervention is relatively prominent, so wind noise still has a noticeable impact on the call microphone, potentially affecting continuity. However, in USB‑C digital audio direct connection mode, the microphone performance is significantly better—higher volume, clearer capture, much lower occlusion, and far less wind noise interference. Overall, the Edge 2 shows significant improvement in all aspects of noise cancellation compared to the previous generation. The main gaps between it and the current Skyline Level new models are primarily the occlusion effect when speaking in transparency mode, a slight roll‑off in the high‑frequency range, and marginally less low‑frequency depth. Otherwise, it does not exhibit any obvious tier gap from flagship noise‑cancelling headphones—in fact, its effective noise cancellation bandwidth even surpasses that of some older flagships. With strong performance in the 500‑yuan price bracket, it stands among the top tier of noise‑cancelling headphones under 1000 yuan. We believe it deserves a place in the Headband Fine Level of the TDS Noise Cancellation Capability Pyramid, ranking near the top of that tier.

Connection & amp; Battery

As a headphone that supports both LDAC and LHDC‑V high‑resolution codecs, we naturally conducted signal tests. Our primary focus was on LDAC, using the Xperia 1 V as the reference device, with AAC performance also briefly covered.
With the Priority on Stable Connection / Best Effort mode enabled and connected to the Xperia 1 V, packet loss and dropouts were minimal regardless of whether WLAN was on or off. Even at a distance of 9 metres with a load‑bearing wall in between, there was no noticeable increase in stuttering. Packet loss and stuttering only became apparent when the distance exceeded 9 metres with a wall in between.
With the same device, we switched to Priority on Sound Quality mode at 990kbps. In signal‑dense areas, enabling LDAC sound quality priority occasionally resulted in stuttering, with no significant change when WLAN was turned on. When both a wall and WLAN were present, stuttering and packet loss began to affect playback beyond 6.5 metres.
After switching to AAC, the test results on the Xperia 1 V, iPad mini 7, and iPhone 14 were sufficiently stable, regardless of WLAN status, with smooth signal performance maintained within a 10‑metre distance.
Overall, as an LDAC headphone, its baseline signal performance is nothing to worry about. For daily use or commuting in non‑signal‑dense areas, we recommend using the Adaptive Bit Rate / Priority on Stable Connection mode. For stable indoor use or in consistent environments like high‑speed trains or flights, you can confidently enable the sound quality priority mode.

For latency, the Edge 2 supports a dedicated low‑latency mode that can be activated by triple‑pressing the noise cancellation button. Following our test procedure, with low‑latency mode enabled and LDAC codec set to signal‑priority mode connected to the Xperia 1 V, streaming video content, the perceived latency is controlled to less than half a syllable at normal speech tempo—sufficient for most video playback scenarios. With low‑latency mode turned off, the perceived difference is minimal. Note that dual‑device connection conflicts with LDAC / LHDC operation, so caution is advised.
In terms of battery life, the official rating is 50 hours of continuous playback on the headphones alone (AAC, noise cancellation on), and a total of up to 18/22.5 hours with the charging case (noise cancellation on/off). As this is an over‑ear headphone, we did not conduct our own endurance test. For charging, PD support is confirmed, with stable charging at approximately 1.4W. It also supports a quick‑charge feature that provides 5 hours of playback from a 5‑minute charge.

Driver, Sound Modes & Codec

The Edge 2 is equipped with a 40mm dynamic driver featuring a wooden dome composite diaphragm and a flexible surround. Supported codecs are SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LHDC‑V. The new STI — Sound Target ID — is also supported, allowing users to quickly apply their preferred tuning presets to a new device when upgrading or switching models. It still supports MOONDROP’s second‑generation DSP and a 5‑band PEQ with +3dB to ‑12dB adjustment per band, along with adjustable Q values. The tuning marketplace and AutoEQ features are also retained. However, these functions are not available under LDAC; if needed, we recommend making adjustments under AAC or LHDC first, then switching back to LDAC.
The Edge 2 is powered by a domestic 22nm SoC. Wired connection is achieved via a full‑digital direct connection through the USB‑C port, with no additional 3.5mm analogue input. This means that in wired mode, the headphones must be powered on and rely on the internal DAC and amplifier circuitry. In testing, it supports up to 96kHz / 24‑bit Wave PCM decoding and 48kHz / 24‑bit microphone input ADC.

Bass quantity is moderate, with thickness and fullness both kept in check. Elasticity is excellent, and sub‑bass extension is decent. Attack and decay are slightly faster, with not much lingering reverb. The sense of bloom and richness in atmospheric rendering are both relatively light. The default tuning of the Edge 2 sounds clean, with bass energy that is not overly dense, offering a modern textural character—tight, fast, and without accumulation. Instruments with fundamentals in the lower midrange do not exhibit any forward projection issues.
In the midrange, vocal positioning is slightly close but not intimate, with a moderate mouth size and a fairly high level of refinement. The presentation places slightly more emphasis on definition of note outlines than on texture rendering, with thickness not particularly high and definition of note outlines being fine with a mild degree of prominence—never overly engaging. There is no strong bias toward male or female vocals, and it accommodates a relatively wide range of voice types, though overly thick or coarse voices may not be the best fit. Grain is relatively fine, and overall smoothness is very high. Tonal colouration is minimal, with only a slight touch in the upper register that does not affect judgement. Laryngeal placement is generally standard, with a relatively rich proportion of breath sounds. Mouth sounds and similar details are mildly forward, while sibilance is still perceptible in some extreme tracks—not completely smoothed over. The vocal frequency range is fairly transparent, with a slight touch of added brightness.

For instruments, most strike a balance between texture and definition of note outlines. Among string instruments, the violin, guitar, and viola have moderate thickness, with a fairly generous amount of detail in bowing and plucking, and a slight emphasis on engagement. The cello’s imaging clarity is decent, though its presence in the soundstage is not particularly prominent. Brass instruments have a moderate sense of presence, and instruments like trumpets that require brightness have sufficient brilliance. Woodwinds sound fairly natural with good airiness. The harmonics are noticeably more relaxed than on the previous generation, and their naturalness is adequate. Among percussion, the kick drum does not have an especially high presence, and the snare decays relatively quickly. Cymbals are slightly brighter, but without any excessive metallic harshness or unwanted brightness.
Overall treble brightness is moderate, with some body in the upper midrange transition, though the overall energy is not overly dense and the prominence of any peaks is kept in check. You can still say it sounds bright, but not aggressive. Treble extension is good, with roll‑off that is neither too fast nor premature.

The soundstage is not particularly large, but it is relatively well‑defined, with fairly clear boundaries. Combined with a moderate sense of “height,” the Edge 2 presents a slightly oblate spherical space. The separation between vocals and instruments is excellent for the price point, and also shows notable improvement over the previous generation, without compromising overall coherence. Resolution ranks among the top tier in the 500‑yuan wireless headphone segment, and generally outperforms the driver quality of many mainstream noise‑cancelling flagships, with a mild emphasis on “analyticalness.” Dynamics are moderate, and transient response is good.

Overall Impression

Although the Edge 2 is positioned slightly higher than the original Edge, this 100 RMB price increase does not represent a minor incremental improvement. The Edge 2 returns to the top tier of the Fine Level in overall noise cancellation performance, with notable strengths in noise cancellation bandwidth and ear pressure control, holding its own against flagship noise‑cancelling models. Its sound quality and tonal tuning maintain a consistent advantage — modern, technically oriented, yet with greater naturalness than before. There are no significant issues with comfort, controls, signal stability, or battery life, and it finally adds wired connectivity through the USB‑C direct connection mode. We believe the Edge 2 is a compelling option in the mid‑price range for those considering both noise cancellation and sound quality as priorities.
