Sony WF-1000XM6 Noise Cancelling True Wireless Earbuds Experience – TDS REVIEW

This is the sixty-third product from Sony to appear officially in the TDS Hearroom.
Given that some matrix media outlets have made it a routine to “sharply critique every new product from international brands while touting their own offerings as supreme,” we have chosen to avoid the launch period and the matrix media frenzy, so we can bring you the richer perspective that only TDS REVIEW offers. The WF‑1000XM6 is currently the Sony true wireless earbuds model we are most satisfied with, and it represents the most complete generation of the entire WF series to date. Is it flawless? No. But has it solved many issues? Yes. This article was originally published on SSPAI.

Package & Accessories

The packaging of the WF‑1000XM6 largely follows the same eco‑friendly design language as the previous generation, including adhesive tape and paper seals that are quite easy to tear — though this time, the surface texture of the earbuds’ seal film feels more premium to the touch. Inside, the accessories include three additional pairs of foam eartips and a short USB‑C to USB‑A charging cable.
The eartip configuration remains the same — different sizes of “noise‑isolating eartips.” The nozzle material is a slightly firmer silicone similar to Comply tips, while the eartip umbrella section is made of polyurethane foam with a certain degree of slow‑rebound. Compared to the original Triple‑Comfort eartips, the surface is smoother, and there is a silicone lining layer beneath the foam, which helps maintain shape retention under pressure. There is also an additional metal mesh grille at the sound nozzle.

Design, Fit & Acoustic Structure

At launch, the WF‑1000XM6 comes in two colour options: one nearly all‑black, and the signature Platinum Silver. Compared to the previous WF‑1000X series, the charging case design of the XM6 has become notably minimalist — a highly geometric approach with a standard capsule‑shaped cross‑section, featuring a smooth, slightly matte finish. Some may find the new design a bit plain, but it actually improves stability during wireless charging on charging pads. The USB‑C port and pairing button remain at the rear. The lid feels satisfying to open — not loose at all — and is easy to flip open with one hand. The earbuds rest securely in their cradles with good magnetic stability. Compared to the WF‑1000XM5, the XM6’s case is slightly larger and more refined in build quality.
The earbuds themselves are still the typical buds‑style bean‑shaped form, but the silhouette has seen a notable redesign. From the side, the highly geometric design language remains consistent, with a fully matte finish across the surface — unlike the glossy front cavity of the previous generation — which should also improve scratch resistance. The shape of the shell, in fact, resembles a miniaturised wireless speaker, especially with the presence of the dual microphone mesh grilles reinforcing that impression. The front cavity, however, still accommodates the ear contour with a certain fullness in the concha cavity.
Compared to the WF‑1000XM5, the XM6’s earpiece is slightly narrower in the cymba concha area, which should reduce the pressure sensation for those with smaller ears. However, the contact area in the concha cavity and the lower ear region remains relatively large, so users with narrower ear canals may still experience a somewhat “floating” fit. The vertical dimension is also slightly longer, resembling a kidney bean. There is a specifically designed recess on the front‑side area of the shell to avoid the tragus structure.

Despite the per‑ear weight increasing to 6.5g, I personally find the fit more comfortable than the XM5. Previously, the XM5 could still cause some discomfort after more than three hours of wear, whereas now the XM6 allows me to wear it continuously for over five hours — from home to the airport, from northern China to the south, and from the airport to the hotel — without any significant discomfort. Of course, fit varies from person to person, so I would recommend especially those with smaller ears to try them on at a Sony store before purchasing.
The WF‑1000X series has always had a good design feature for traditional IEM users — the full‑sized nozzle — which gives users a much wider and more flexible selection of eartips. The case also retains ample space to accommodate full‑sized tips.
It supports IPX4 splash resistance, making it suitable for light exercise sweat or light rain. It would be nice if Sony could improve the water resistance of the 1000X series in the future.

Control & amp; APP

The WF-1000XM6’s onboard controls still rely on touch panel recognition of gestures. The panel is seamlessly integrated with the shell, and thanks to the optimised shell design, operating it no longer significantly affects the fit, while the capsule-like shape also helps reduce accidental touches. It supports recognition of single-tap, double-tap, triple-tap, multiple consecutive taps, and long-press. By default, the left side toggles noise cancellation modes with a single tap, the right side controls playback with a single tap, double-tap or triple-tap on the right skips tracks, rapid consecutive taps on either side adjust volume, a long-press on the left activates Quick Attention, and a long-press on the right summons the voice assistant. These functions can also be customised in the app.
The controls are responsive and immediate, with no noticeable lag, and the voice feedback volume is adequate by default, with five manual adjustment levels available. It supports wear detection with quick response time, activating within one second of removing or inserting the earbuds — second only to Apple’s response speed. It also supports head gesture controls such as nodding or shaking for call answering and scene-based playback management.

Let’s also go over a few smart features. Among them, Auto Play is a function that automatically starts music playback tailored to different sports scenarios. For the Chinese mainland version, it can be linked with QQ Music, Kugou Music, and NetEase Cloud Music. Based on my experience, it seems to rely on the accelerometer for detection, as enabling this feature prompts you to pair a new Bluetooth device. When you start running, it automatically begins playing your preset playlist. On the first wear of the day, it announces the date, and it can also provide hourly chimes on the hour. The operation prompts are loud enough even in moderately noisy environments, and you can adjust the voice volume and language, with voice announcements and notification read‑outs being sufficiently clear. It also supports location‑based automatic switching of noise cancellation modes.
In addition to waking the built‑in voice assistant via the wake‑word, it can also recognise basic word commands to trigger essential functions. Through the voice assistant portal, you can conveniently manage call controls, information read‑outs, and feature activations.

The Quick Access portal on the Chinese mainland version of the WF‑1000XM6 also supports a few more services than when the LinkBuds 2nd generation first launched — in addition to NetEase Cloud Music and QQ Music, it now includes Kugou Music and Tencent Xiaowei.

ANC, Transparency & Call

The noise cancellation performance of the WF-1000XM5 has gradually been overshadowed by newer models in the flagship TWS competition over the past couple of years. There has also been a lingering comment that the 1000X series TWS models rely heavily on “passive sealing.” So, how does this generation’s shell redesign affect its perceived noise cancellation? Thanks to the foam eartips and the fit of the shell itself, the WF-1000XM6 still maintains excellent passive isolation, effectively suppressing a significant portion of high-frequency noise, with noticeable attenuation of ambient vocal brightness as well.
The XM6 incorporates a new noise-cancelling processor, the QN3e, alongside the 32-bit integrated processor V2. When active noise cancellation is engaged, the XM6 clearly suppresses noise from the low to low-mid frequencies. Its subjective depth of cancellation is on par with models like the AirPods Pro 3 and QC Ultra 2, and it handles noise more cleanly than the AirPods Pro 2 and XM5. In terms of frequency coverage, the cancellation depth in the vocal range is generally greater than that of the XM5, more aggressive than the AirPods Pro 2, and close to the level of the AirPods Pro 3. The ANC bandwidth has also improved compared to past models, remaining among the top tier even above 1kHz. Combined with passive isolation, the overall perceived noise cancellation performance is roughly on par with the AirPods Pro 3, marking a significant step forward from the XM5. Additionally, considering that the AirPods Pro 3’s high-frequency noise reduction also largely relies on new foam tips and deeper insertion, from my personal comparison, the XM6’s more distributed ear contact points actually make it somewhat more comfortable.

The ear pressure sensation with noise cancellation enabled is relatively mild, and the XM6 handles this aspect better than most competitors in its class. At the same time, as part of the 1000X series, the XM6 continues an early strength of the line: pressure equalisation. In comparison tests with the XM5, APP2, and APP3 during flights, the XM6 performed the best in pressure equalisation, requiring the fewest ear pressure adjustments on similar routes. Additionally, its background noise floor with ANC enabled is also well controlled.
In terms of wind noise resistance, this generation still does not include a dedicated wind noise reduction mode, but the microphone grilles do appear to incorporate a physical wind noise suppression structure. There is still a slight amount of wind noise when facing directly toward or away from the wind source, while side‑on exposure results in very low wind noise.
The ambient sound mode offers twenty volume levels, and there is also an automatic ambient sound toggle with three sensitivity options. However, it only adjusts automatically when there is a noticeable change in ambient noise characteristics; if the environment remains stable, it will keep the previously set ambient sound level.
This is also currently the most natural ambient sound mode among Sony’s true wireless earbuds. It captures external sounds naturally without any significant frequency imbalance, and the treble is not overly subdued. You can also enable “Focus on Voice” to get a boost in the upper midrange transition frequencies. The speech passthrough is sufficiently usable, without any noticeable muffled sensation. In our opinion, setting the ambient sound to level 20 introduces a slight amplification of environmental noise, while level 16 is a more balanced setting. Wind noise interference in ambient sound mode is similarly directional — most noticeable when facing toward or away from the wind source — and is generally not severe.
For calls, the WF‑1000XM6 is equipped with eight microphones, a bone conduction sensor, AI beamforming, and DNN‑based deep neural network noise reduction. With this setup, it becomes Sony’s best call‑quality TWS model to date, offering excellent clarity among current flagship TWS products — even better than many models with microphones located at the bottom of the stem. We tested it in operator network environments and found call volume to be moderate and clarity well maintained. Some wind noise during calls is still present.
Overall, the WF‑1000XM6 delivers the level of noise cancellation performance we expect from the 1000X series at its very best. Along with the AirPods Pro 3, it stands as one of the well‑rounded examples among new products in this class. Whether it’s noise cancellation depth, frequency coverage, overall perceived performance, naturalness of transparency mode, speech passthrough usability, or call quality — there are no notable weaknesses. The only area that could be optimised further is adaptive wind noise processing from the front and rear directions. In noise cancellation, it matches the AirPods Pro 3 in overall performance; it has more advantages over the QC Ultra 2 and Galaxy Buds4 Pro, and clearly outperforms the AirPods Pro 2, Galaxy Buds4 Pro, and FreeBuds Pro 5 in combined noise cancellation perception. In transparency/ambient sound, it ranks second only to the AirPods Pro 3/2, sharing the position of best‑in‑class ambient sound performance (alongside the Galaxy Buds4 Pro) just behind Apple. We believe the Sony WF‑1000XM6 deserves a place at the In‑Ear Skyline Level in the TDS Noise Cancellation Capability Pyramid, ranking near the top of that tier.

Connection & amp; Battery

In terms of signal stability, Sony has optimised the antenna placement and dimensions this time, along with communication algorithm improvements. As a device equipped with LDAC, we conducted subjective signal tests on both modes.
With the Priority on Stable Connection / Best Effort mode enabled and connected to the standard test device, the Xperia 5 III, packet loss and dropouts were minimal regardless of whether WLAN was on or off. Even at a distance of 7 metres with a load‑bearing wall in between, there was no noticeable increase in stuttering. Packet loss and stuttering only became apparent when the distance exceeded 7.5 metres with a wall in between.
With the same device, we switched to Priority on Sound Quality mode. In signal‑dense areas, enabling LDAC in sound quality priority mode resulted in stuttering. For daily use or commuting in non‑signal‑dense areas, we recommend using the Priority on Stable Connection / Best Effort setting. For stable indoor near‑field usage, you may choose to enable sound quality priority mode.
After switching to AAC, both the Xperia 5 III and iPhone 14 delivered sufficiently stable results, regardless of whether WLAN was on or off, and maintained a smooth signal even at a considerable distance.
Overall, as an LDAC TWS, you can comfortably keep the LDAC in signal‑priority mode with most compatible devices for everyday use.

In terms of latency, as there is no dedicated game mode, we tested it in normal use — with LDAC codec in signal‑priority mode connected to the Xperia 5 III for both streaming and local video playback. The latency was roughly around half a syllable beyond normal speech tempo, leaving room for improvement. When connected via AAC to the iPad mini 7 and iPhone 14, latency was slightly better, at around half a syllable of normal speech tempo.
For battery life, Sony claims up to 8 hours of continuous playback with ANC on and 12 hours with ANC off, and up to 24 hours with the charging case (ANC on). In my standardised testing, with DSEE enabled, power‑saving mode disabled, LDAC connected to the Sony Xperia 5 III, ANC on, adaptive sound control enabled, all other settings at default, and volume at 50%, streaming Apple Music Lossless and podcasts (Xiaoyuzhou) continuously, the earbuds alone lasted 6 hours and 31 minutes — averaged over three full‑charge tests. Considering that the test conditions were likely based on AAC, and that under AAC with the same conditions the runtime far exceeds 8 hours, the official figures are broadly consistent with real‑world performance.
It also supports a quick charge feature providing 1 hour of playback from 5 minutes of charging. Qi wireless charging is retained, and there is also a default‑enabled option that automatically powers off the earbuds when they are not worn for an extended period. We measured both USB‑C wired charging and wireless charging performance — please refer to the table below for details.

Spatial Audio & Background Effect

As usual, the XM6 supports Sony’s own 360 Reality Audio, which still requires specific apps to access. When listening to 360RA content after proper measurement, it delivers a fairly realistic soundstage, with only a slight sense of compression behind the head — but this does require native support from the source material. Head‑tracking response speed has also improved, now approaching the accuracy of Apple’s ecosystem, though compatibility ultimately depends on the phone itself, as it relies on Android Head Tracking or similar frameworks.
The new “Background Effect” feature introduced in the LinkBuds series has also been implemented on the XM6. Across its three ambient sound simulation modes, the spatial imaging and positioning accuracy are fairly convincing — noticeably better than the LinkBuds Fit, with the café mode in particular approaching the level of the LinkBuds Open.

Driver, Sound Modes & Codec

The WF‑1000XM5 was equipped with an 8.4mm dynamic driver named the “Driver Unit X.” For the XM6, the 8.4mm dynamic driver now features a new layered diaphragm with a corrugated groove structure and a flexible surround.
Supported codecs include SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. DSEE is still present, and it’s the flagship‑grade DSEE Extreme.
In the app, in addition to the six standard presets, the custom equaliser has also been upgraded. You can now adjust ±6dB across ten frequency points. This time, active listening descriptions have been added for the six presets, helping entry‑level users quickly find the option that best suits their needs. The “Find Your Equaliser” feature is also retained.

Sound Description

Based on LDAC codec with sound quality priority, adaptive sound control and noise cancellation enabled, DSEE set to auto, and 360RA and equaliser turned off.
Bass quantity is moderate, with a certain thickness and controlled fullness. Elasticity is good, and sub‑bass extension is adequate. Attack and decay are moderate, with not much lingering reverb. The sense of bloom in atmosphere is minimal, with only a mild richness. The low‑frequency performance of the XM6 is solid and restrained — it doesn’t overdo the colouration, instead maintaining sufficient thickness while keeping quality intact. Instruments whose fundamentals lie in the lower midrange do not lean forward noticeably.
In the midrange, vocal positioning is moderate, with no obvious enlargement of the vocal image, and refinement is not particularly emphasised. The presentation prioritises vocal texture slightly more than definition of note outlines. Thickness is moderate, and the definition of note outlines is not overly prominent. There is no strong bias toward male or female vocals, and it accommodates a wide range of voice types — or rather, no particular voice type is given a distinct advantage. Grain is slightly retained, while overall smoothness is adequate. The tonal colouration is not heavy — compared to previous 1000X models, it’s actually quite neutral — though strictly speaking, it still leans slightly warm, but not enough to affect judgement. Laryngeal positioning is slightly high, and breath sounds are relatively abundant but not overly emphasised. Mouth sounds are well suppressed without being overly forward, though you can still perceive a hint of them. Sibilance handling is also relatively smooth. The vocal frequency range is reasonably transparent, without any obvious artificial brightening.

In terms of instruments, most instruments are presented with texture taking priority over definition of note outlines. Among string instruments, the violin, guitar, and viola have suitable thickness, with a moderate level of detail in bowing and plucking that is not overly prominent. The cello has a relatively solid body, with a balanced proportion in the soundstage. Brass instruments do not convey an exceptionally grand presence, and instruments like trumpets that require brightness do not exhibit excessive brilliance. Woodwinds come across as fairly natural, though the sense of airiness is not particularly full. Instrumental harmonics are moderate in quantity and reasonably natural. Among percussion, the kick drum has a moderate presence, the snare decays at a moderate pace, and cymbal brightness is not excessive, with little to no metallic harshness or excess intensity.
Treble brightness is moderate, with no particularly emphasised energy and a smooth overall character. Treble extension is commendable for a TWS, with a slightly fast roll‑off that is not prematurely cut.
The soundstage is relatively well‑defined but not extremely wide, with similar lateral and depth dimensions and clear boundaries. Combined with a fairly modest sense of height, the XM6 presents a slightly oblate spherical space. Separation between vocals and instruments is adequate, and overall coherence is maintained. Resolution has improved compared to previous generations, placing it among the top tier of digital‑brand TWS models, though it still falls slightly short of the flagship offerings from AVIOT and Technics in sheer technical performance. However, it avoids excessive “analyticalness.” Dynamics are moderate, and transient response is acceptable.
With noise cancellation turned off, the mid‑bass transition becomes smoother, and the spatial presentation feels slightly more open. The modest presence around 6kHz adds a touch more vocal transparency, making the overall sound cleaner and subtly enhancing the “analyticalness,” yet without ever becoming harsh. This change was not as evident on the XM5, but on the current firmware of the XM6, it is noticeable. In our view, the sound with ANC off is better and better showcases the driver’s capabilities, though this may be a necessary trade‑off when ANC is engaged.
Compared to the XM5, with both units in ANC‑on mode, the XM6 offers better control over low‑frequency energy and treble harshness, with a slight improvement in driver performance. However, it is not a night‑and‑day difference in resolution. If you are accustomed to the XM5’s signature, you might feel the XM6 lacks some atmosphere, but in reality, the XM6 is significantly more balanced and healthier in its tuning — regardless of whether ANC is on or off.

Overall Impression

As Sony’s flagship TWS earbuds, the WF-1000XM6 successfully returns Sony to the top tier of noise‑cancelling TWS products. Compared to the XM5, it leads its class across all major aspects, particularly in noise cancellation bandwidth coverage and improved tonal balance. It can be considered the most straightforward recommendation among Android‑side noise‑cancelling TWS flagships — without the need for qualifiers. Against Japanese sound‑oriented flagships like the AZ100, the XM6 is also more balanced, while its sound quality does not fall behind.
There are now two main areas Sony needs to address going forward: one is adaptive wind noise optimisation, and the other is latency under LDAC. But the core aspects — the essentials — the WF-1000XM6 already handles quite well. We hope it will bring a new direction to Sony’s other non‑flagship product lines, and even to the broader personal audio division. As of now, for any consumer who prioritises LDAC, has a sufficient budget, and is open to the buds form factor, the WF-1000XM6 is our flagship‑tier recommendation for noise‑cancelling TWS earbuds — and it’s unlikely that any new challenger will break this position in the near future.
