Edge uses a very cold light grey colour scheme for the packaging like RSV MKII it uses a square cardboard box with a partitioned interior design Accessories include a carrying case a cleaning cloth a separate eartip pouch a cleaning brush and six pairs of eartipsThe round carrying case is not small it is a leather zippered pouch with a certain amount of crush resistance and a suede interior inside The interior space can fit the Edge set and a medium sized dongle DAC Together with the eartip pouch it can effectively reduce friction between the earpiecesThe eartip configuration consists of two types totalling six pairs as followsThree pairs of grey bullet style eartips with a moderate bore sizeThree pairs of UC Tips made of liquid silicone with a slightly larger bore offering a relatively high degree of ear canal fit and increased friction<\/p>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n
Design, Fit & Acoustic Structure<\/h5>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n
Edge is made entirely of titanium alloy with CNC precision carving and only comes in one colour scheme titanium grey Its shape is probably the most radical Softears has ever done Designer Baihe mentioned at the SIAS launch event last year that Edge was inspired by the boxy look of the SIGMA BF camera The SIGMA BF is an outlier in recent camera design being even more geometric than the Leica T which uses a raw metal surface texture The entire body is almost just a single block of anodised aluminium with a lens attached and Edge adapts this shape to an IEMYou can see that the rear cavity of the Edge is also a clean square block interlocking with the part that houses the driver The driver housing looks like a camera lens and from the side there is a finely detailed anti slip texture resembling the focus ring or aperture ring of a lens The combination of square and round forms has been seen before on Softears Turii and Twilight series but none have been as clean and extremely minimalist as the Edge A reminder that this titanium metal does not mean the surface hardness is extremely high We strongly recommend using the included eartip pouch for storage After carrying it around during the recent exhibition the angular edges of the Edge left slight scratches on the surface of my Edge units when packed loosely with other items<\/p>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n
This design at first glance may not look very friendly for wear but in fact it is noticeably smaller than the Turii series Only the front cavity surface actually contacts the ear structure and most people will not have the concha area touched during normal wear The angular rear cavity floats above the ear plane and does not cause any pressure points The front cavity has decent fit contacting almost only the concha cavity Most people will have a floating fit so the only thing to worry about is that some ear shapes might cause contact at a special angle near the connector socket Aside from that regardless of ear size the fit is quite comfortable Given the shape and thickness of this cavity side lying wear is naturally not recommendedThe nozzle is thick but the included eartips are relatively easy to install There is a set of three vents on the top and one on the inner side which is a standard dynamic driver IEM pressure equalisation design Passive isolation is average and there are no pressure equalisation issues worth noting One thing to add is that the Edge gives the impression of a square rear cavity fitted over a cylindrical front cavity but in fact the rear cavity is a complete square plus round structure with a relatively complex acoustic labyrinth designed on the inside as shown in the image below<\/p>\n\n

Softears pairs the Edge with a cable specified as 7N monocrystalline copper inner core with a silver plated copper outer core in a dual layer structure Although the part below the splitter still appears as two strands coaxially wound this design actually reduces the resistance difference between the inner and outer layers Braid tightness is moderate and the cable is relatively soft with only slight self tanglingThe interchangeable cable system uses a 0.78mm 2PIN recessed socket The socket is recessed by about 2mm with no anti misalignment groove and can accommodate standard flat pin cables The plug side uses raised pins with an anti misalignment groove and the pin fit is quite tight Default termination is 4.4mm balanced with a non interchangeable plugFor the driver the Edge features an 11mm diameter dynamic driver with no further detailed information providedImpedance is 16 ohms with a sensitivity of 128dB Vrms The Edge is actually a relatively easy to drive IEM We recommend pairing it starting with mid range dongle DACs such as the Octave Dawning 2 or even higher tier options like the Space Pro and LINK10 preferably using the balanced output In terms of tonal matching the Edge does not pair well with overly aggressive sources either too warm or too cold Neither is ideal but this is not an issue for most dongle DACs<\/p>\n\n
Sound Description<\/h5>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n
Based on stock cable balanced drive with stock UC Tips liquid silicone eartips meeting the power requirements for proper drivingLow frequency quantity is slightly on the higher side thickness and fullness are both quite substantial elasticity is excellent and sub bass extension is good Attack and decay are not very fast but residual decay is not excessive especially compared to the Chengdu show version The sense of bloom in atmosphere is light with a fair amount of richness The low frequency of the Edge is full dense abundant and weighty with a very prominent presence but the production version indeed does not affect the presentation of the midrange and treble appearing abundant yet reasonable a positive case study for modern bass leaning tuning Instruments with fundamentals in the lower midrange have a slight forward tiltMidrange vocal proximity is close mouth size is relatively standard with a decent level of refinement Texture and outline of the voice are generally well balanced thickness is not high outlines are fairly solid but not overly emphasised The tendency between male and female voices is not obvious suitable for vocals with a certain amount of energy Grain is relatively fine and overall smoothness is quite good Tonality generally does not have an obvious bias especially compared to the RSV MKII where the Edge presents a more neutral vocal tonality Laryngeal position is slightly higher than neutral and the breath sound ratio is moderate Detail such as mouth sounds has limited forward tilt Sibilance is audible in some extreme anisong productions but does not cause significant trouble during regular pop music listening Overall vocal frequency range transparency is decent without excessive added brightnessFor instruments most instruments also maintain a balance between texture and outline Among string instruments violin guitar and viola do not have high thickness pluck and bow details are relatively rich with slight emphasis and are not masked by the low frequency Cello has a fairly full and solid body with a relatively large proportion in the soundstage Brass instruments have good presence and energy trumpets and other instruments requiring brightness have an appropriate amount of brightness Woodwinds have good airiness though slightly less natural than the Turii but still better than most hybrid IEMs Harmonics of instruments are generally tight yet still relatively natural Among percussion instruments kick drum has high presence snare decays at a moderate pace cymbals and similar instruments have sufficient brightness without exaggeration with little harshness or metallic characterOverall treble brightness is moderate with two modest peaks and good overall smoothness Treble extension is quite good roll off is slightly early but not prematurely soSoundstage expands to some extent in both width and depth but boundaries remain relatively clear without a particularly strong sense of diffusion which is also related to the lower openness compared to the Turii series Combined with an appropriate sense of height the Edge presents a slightly oblate spatial shape Separation between vocals and instruments is good and overall coherence is not compromised Resolution capability is commendable for a dynamic driver IEM at the 3K price tier overall technical performance is slightly below Brilliance TZ700 and Turii but falls within the Monster Room Plus level with a mild sense of analyticalness Dynamics are excellent and transient response is quite good<\/p>\n\n
Overall Impression<\/h5>\n\n<\/figure>\n\n
Edge is an IEM with a rather novel appearance breaking away from the traditional custom style universal fit form while still maintaining good wearing compatibility In terms of driver performance it is noticeably better than the Monster Room IEMs especially in low frequency texture Unlike its highly modernist appearance which even leans towards an international style of excessive simplicity its sound tuning is relatively stylised The thick and abundant bass combined with relatively clear midrange and treble that is not drowned out together form its sonic signature Our view is that unless you particularly dislike the presence of low frequency the Edge is worth considering as one of the priority audition options for dynamic driver IEMs at this price point<\/p>\n\n
