The product form of the Quloos MUB5 was destined to be an outlier from the very beginning Its physical size is significantly larger than both dongle DACs and larger dongles being closer to that of current flagship DAPs yet its primary form factor is that of a Bluetooth DAC The MUB5 supports optical coaxial and USB wired inputs allowing it to function as a portable DAC Amp However when used with most smartphones its size blocks the camera module and combined with portability concerns stacking it back to back with a phone is not really practical Nevertheless since its release last year the MUB5 has been in constant short supply with the next batch expected to arrive around late June to early July according to official sources Both domestically and internationally the MUB5 has been receiving widespread acclaim<\/p>\n\n

The fundamental reason for the MUB5 s popularity is that its product form effectively pre filters customers even before most people make a purchase decision First it filters out audiophiles who require local playback such as pure music players Second due to its physical size which prevents it from being attached to the back of a phone it filters out users who typically go for dongle DACs Third those who need an Android based DAP would not consider the MUB5 either since it lacks both an Android system and local storage In my view the MUB5 is positioned as a flagship DAP without local playback functionality Aside from that its overall design follows the thinking and hardware framework of a flagship lossless music player This precisely targets the needs of audiophiles who rely heavily on phone based streaming services but find the sound quality of dongle DACs insufficient compared to dedicated DAPs Even for someone like me a die hard local playback enthusiast using the MUB5 to audition earphones at exhibitions is more convenient than pulling out a domestic DAP So those who truly need the MUB5 can tell at a glance from its functions and form factor that this is exactly what they have been looking for<\/p>\n\n

This article shares my subjective impressions after using the MUB5 for over two months along with sound performance when paired with different earphones and headphones in various usage scenarios as a reference for those who are interested and considering a purchaseThe MUB5 uses a 19 plus 5 segmented R2R DAC architecture with 178 custom resistors and features 20 independent power supply groups for each section In addition to the built in 5000mAh battery which supports approximately 8 hours of battery life it also supports 12V DC power input When powered via DC the maximum output power increases from 1500mW to 2500mW at 32 ohms giving it a somewhat desktop audio gear character In terms of input and output the MUB5 supports Bluetooth input optical coaxial and USB inputs as well as LINE IN and LINE OUT It can function as a DAC outputting analogue signals to an amplifier or as an amplifier receiving external signals The primary input methods are Bluetooth reception paired with phones and tablets as well as coaxial optical and USB making it compatible with various sources including DAPs phones tablets and computers Whether for portable use at home or in office settings it is highly convenient<\/p>\n\n

When I take the MUB5 out for music listening I mainly use its Bluetooth mode Although Bluetooth sounds a bit more “Hufi” compared to USB connected to a phone the convenience of not having to stay tethered to the phone is incredibly appealing When working or relaxing in a fixed location using the MUB5 with a high quality USB cable paired with a phone or computer to achieve better sound quality it can to some extent replace or even surpass flagship DAPs Although the size and weight of the MUB5 are still noticeably smaller than those of portable HiFi players in the 10,000 yuan range it is still a fair bit smaller and relatively lightweight More importantly the sound potential of the MUB5 scales up progressively with usage conditions Bluetooth gives one sound wired gives another and wired with external power gives yet another each step better and more “HiFi” than the last<\/p>\n\n

The exterior design of the MUB5 clearly draws from the company s earlier portable players like the Quloos QA361 but the craftsmanship and finish are significantly more refined The body is fairly square shorter than current Android flagship DAPs with similar width but about twice the thickness When compared to other DAPs it is larger than the Cayin N63 and HiBy R6PRO 2025 but smaller and lighter than the Sony WM1ZM2 Shanling M8T and HiBy R8II If you actually stack it on the back of a phone it looks more like a power bank I recently took it on a flight to an out of town exhibition and listened to the MUB5 throughout the journey After landing a rather clueless flight attendant stared at the MUB5 and asked me Is that a radio To keep it simple I just told her It s an MP3 The visual highlights of the MUB5 include its solid metallic shell stepped side design and the large volume wheel that practically begs to be squeezedCompared to large touchscreen DAPs the controls of the MUB5 are more modest It has a small monochrome touchscreen but the menu hierarchy is simple and the logic is clear making it very easy to pick up Through the menu you can adjust input output gain settings and sound modes The MUB5 offers three gain levels Low gain is suitable for sensitive and easy to drive IEMs Normal gain works well for the vast majority of earphones while High gain is ideal for earphones and headphones that benefit from power brings out the magic All in all this compact device is impressively versatile and technically capable<\/p>\n\n

Compared to the Quloos MUB1 from a few years ago the MUB5 is a full two sizes larger but in return it delivers a more comprehensive relaxed warm and versatile character along with a significant leap in sound quality The MUB5 carries the thick and natural sonic foundation and the neutral warm tonal characteristics of Quloos classic DAP products Many people fall in love with it at first listen precisely because of this rounded and largely free from digital harshness listening experience The soundstage of the MUB5 is relatively expansive and substantial with a well balanced three axis proportion making it quite effective at reproducing live recordings Paired with high quality earphones or headphones it presents excellent sense of presence while its layering resolution and separation are among the best in its class capable of holding its own even against flagship DAPs above its price point From the playback of large scale classical symphony recordings the MUB5 demonstrates impressive dynamic headroom and clean swift transient response with a well judged tempo striking a good balance between atmosphere and emotional expression in music reproduction with plenty of musicalityOne of the major strengths of the MUB5 is its genre versatility as mentioned earlier The thick and warm sonic foundation ensures stability across all music types while its technical capabilities allow it to handle demanding genres such as classical and rock with composure For genres like pop vocals and jazz where rich imaging and midrange thickness are essential the MUB5 and Quloos truly excel The relaxed and natural midrange imaging with a sense of diffusion offers excellent three dimensionality while the midrange tonality handles both male and female vocals with ease making the rounded midrange presentation a major plus in the listening experience Even for recordings of midrange centric instruments such as saxophone French horn and cello calling it a pleasure to listen to would not be an exaggeration In terms of bass the MUB5 not only delivers generous quantity but also excels in sub bass quality and resolution offering elastic powerful and layered bass that moves beyond dry and monotonous blanket like low end Instead it delivers layered and gradual bass impact with a balance of tension and flexibility The treble is where the MUB5 plays it relatively safe The definition of note outlines is abundant but not overly prominent and the sharpness is kept to a modest level with the treble clearly serving the listening experience and musicality Excellent resolution supports the completeness of treble instrument imaging and paves the way for smooth and refined extension ultimately delivering a treble performance with height refinement and authority The treble of the MUB5 is not dark but follows a neutral and smooth approach not pursuing extreme brightness while ensuring listenability within a high technical performance framework<\/p>\n\n

Another strength of the MUB5 is its synergy with a wide range of earphones and headphones Take for example the ARTPICAL Satan which I reviewed not long ago a typical exciting sounding IEM with explosive technical performance that requires a source with good control to avoid harsh treble when driven With the MUB5 driving it the Satan sounds well behaved and solid even with the stock cable and stock eartips with a slight hint of smoothness while its inherent impressive sound quality is fully unleashed The MOONDROP Yuandian a 20,000 yuan tier earphone benefits from complementary gain when paired with the MUB5 The midrange becomes thicker with even a touch of analogue character and overall musical adaptability is significantly enhanced while the treble and bass become more three dimensional with richer detail Even the FAITH E1000 and FAITH U1000 known for their demanding source refinement requirements deliver a round full and detailed sound when driven by the MUB5 with a neutral and substantial character when listening to classical musicThe MUB5 features two sound modes M1 and M2 The former emphasises analogue character with more pronounced warmth and richness making it suitable for those who prefer a less aggressive listening experience The latter offers a more modern sounding signature with exaggerated extension at both ends and more prominent definition of note outlines though the tonal flavour is somewhat reduced My unit is still running the original 1.0 firmware and I find the sound when driving headphones directly quite satisfying The latest firmware version reportedly pushes the technical performance further but with slightly reduced thickness and smoothnessIn Bluetooth mode the MUB5 leans towards a warm and thick sound with some HuFi character that favours pop vocal listening When connected via USB the sound becomes more solid with noticeably improved resolution and imaging three dimensionality making this my preferred mode for overall balance and versatility With external power applied the MUB5 reveals even more of its desktop audio gear like character as the power and technical performance scale further enhancing soundstage and imaging and adding a more speaker like quality to the presentation<\/p>\n\n

All in all rather than categorising the MUB5 as a portable DAC Amp I prefer to compare it alongside flagship DAPs as its technical performance and sound aesthetic are much closer to the latter If you do not have a strict need for local playback and are not overly concerned about size and weight the MUB5 can truly serve as a replacement for a flagship DAP in your portable audio system delivering a more mature and high quality listening experience when streaming music<\/p>\n\n
