nicknames among which the most famous were Real Man and WIFIMAN Who would have thought that the joke would become reality HIFIMAN actually released a streaming headphone based on WiFi and they went all out right from the start turning two classic high end models the HE1000 and HIFIMAN Arya into WiFi Editions I have said many times before that the bottleneck of Bluetooth earphones sound quality was never really about bit rate Although this article is not about Bluetooth the point I want to make is that even if you do not care much about the WiFi functionality and simply want to use the HE1000 WiFi as a Bluetooth headphone or even as a USB C digital headphone it is still the most premium model in the industry today without exception

<figure class="wp-block-image unboxing and go straight into discussing the product itself
The exterior of the HE1000 WiFi is essentially an evolution of the HE1000 Unveiled and its colour scheme is even more distinctive a champagne gold that was quite popular in recent years The hue and gloss are natural neither overly flashy nor too dull making it one of the more premium looking models in the entire HIFIMAN headphone lineup In terms of wearing comfort while the HE1000 WiFi has ample volume to accommodate sufficiently deep ear cups one slight drawback is that the headband clamping pressure is relatively strong commonly referred to as tightness However this sensation varies from person to person and those with particularly wide head circumferences like myself should take note During wear if you feel the clamping is too tight I recommend extending the headband as far down as possible as the wide headband strap and sufficiently soft ear pads help distribute the weight effectively Compared to the original HE1000 Unveiled the comfort level has its own trade offs The most surprising aspect of the WiFi Edition is that despite having a more complex internal module and a built in battery the overall weight is comparable to the HE1000 Unveiled Moreover the WiFi Edition features additional protective grilles over the drivers so HIFIMAN has clearly put serious effort into both integration and lightweight design

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1440" height="960" src="https://static.gothamproaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/94ae94d55cbfbd170-1440x960.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2696" 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" />

In terms of functionality HIFIMAN has placed the USB C port and physical buttons all on the same side of the HE1000 WiFi The unit does generate some heat during extended charging The buttons include power function and volume controls Regarding the physical buttons I do have some criticism After all these years of making Bluetooth headphones HIFIMAN still has not quite nailed button usability The four buttons have poor tactile feedback and are not clearly differentiated requiring a certain amount of time to get used to For future iterations the design should clearly distinguish the power and function buttons in terms of size and feel and perhaps even adopt a toggle switch mechanism for mode switching Switching between the USB Bluetooth and WiFi modes on the HE1000 WiFi Edition is relatively slow in response and the indicator light colours and brightness are not particularly clear The volume up and down buttons also lack a crisp tactile feel and are too small So in this regard I still feel that these two WiFi series headphones do not quite nail the usage details and switching between different modes smoothly is not easy There is a learning curve and it is the kind of device that is hard to figure out without reading the manual
The concept of the system mentioned in the title is by no means just a marketing gimmick HIFIMAN has integrated a streamlined Himalaya DAC solution a complex power management module an independent streaming module independent left and right channel DACs as well as LPF and amplifier circuits all inside the ear cups using an irregularly shaped PCB embedded within the driver assembly The driver itself inherits the company s high end nanometer grade planar diaphragm and Stealth Magnets technology Not only have I not noticed any compromise in performance but the tuning also captures the essence of the HE1000 series And I do mean the HE1000 series rather than just the HE1000 Unveiled a point I will elaborate on further below

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1440" height="960" src="https://static.gothamproaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/c94866ea456e04adb-1440x960.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2697" 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" />

Before diving into the sound discussion it is only natural to talk about the WiFi mode and what makes it so good
Remember back in the day when many brands made smart speakers Looking back many of those smart speakers actually did not sound half bad But they all ended up being crushed by the likes of Xiao Ai and Tmall Genie Those speakers essentially connected directly to home WiFi and streamed from the source The HE1000 WiFi works the same way Bluetooth s maximum bit rate regardless of how many bits or kilohertz it claims on paper can still sound poor if the bit rate is insufficient It is the same principle as a 4K video not necessarily being clearer than a 1080P one With WiFi transmission even just standard 16 bit 44.1kHz lossless audio can easily run at tens or even hundreds of megabits per second Bluetooth on the other hand whether LDAC LHDC or aptX Lossless has very limited usable bandwidth LDAC is also dynamically bit rate adjusted and considering stability and packet loss it rarely runs at its maximum 990 kbps most of the time

And what exactly is packet loss
In Bluetooth transmission the phone cuts the audio into small packets and sends them to the earphones The earphones receive them and send back an acknowledgement If a packet is not received the phone resends it When packet loss occurs three things can happen each degrading sound quality frame drops waiting for retransmission leading to buffer depletion causing direct muting or stuttering and the Bluetooth connection being locked to a lower bit rate to ensure stability In WiFi mode however the HE1000 WiFi can receive data directly from the server without compression eliminating the entire process of audio going from the network to the phone then to the earphones with the risk of packet loss In fact the principle is simple think of screen mirroring Once screen mirroring is started you can even turn off the phone and it still works because the playback device is working independently This is based on the well known DLNA protocol and the more stable and user friendly Spotify and Tidal are essentially built on similar principles though they use proprietary streaming protocols limited to their respective apps It must be acknowledged that DLNA casting protocols for services like QQ Music and NetEase Cloud Music are not particularly stable and various manufacturers of network streamers have long struggled with optimisation QQ later introduced the QPlay protocol certification but the HE1000 WiFi is not among the certified devices DLNA casting does come with some instability such as track skipping failures or occasional white noise requiring a reconnection Objectively speaking this is not an issue unique to HIFIMAN but a challenge that all brands currently face in achieving flawless DLNA optimisation

So why did I say at the beginning that the bottleneck of Bluetooth earphones sound quality was never really about bit rate and what does that have to do with WiFi Let me put it this way and it will become clear Those top tier Bluetooth headphones whether from Focal Sennheiser Dali or HIFIMAN s own various BT models do they sound any worse on Apple devices which only support AAC What about the Bowers & Wilkins PX8 which can deliver excellent information even under SBC Essentially Bluetooth devices over the years have not only benefited from higher bit rates but have also seen significant upgrades in digital signal processing and analogue signal chains Take HIFIMAN s two latest models whether the Arya WiFi or the HE1000 WiFi even when used purely in Bluetooth mode they still deliver sound quality comparable to mid to high end wired headphones driven by a small desktop amp or a high end DAP Some might question how such a small module inside the earphones can provide that level of driving power The answer is simple A standalone player has to deal with mains interference and a wider range of load conditions whereas the Himalaya Mini solution that HIFIMAN has built for the HE1000 WiFi is a one to one service It does not need to worry about impedance matching or pairing compatibility because the manufacturer has already taken all of that into account during the design phase So if you are not particularly interested in the WiFi functionality and find it less convenient than Bluetooth my conclusion is this the HE1000 WiFi is the best Bluetooth headphone on the planet without exception And if you are an iPhone user be sure to make use of Airplay which is significantly more stable and hassle free than DLNA on Android

In terms of sound quality based on the WiFi mode as the reference the HE1000 WiFi inherits the refined clean and penetrating treble of the HE1000 Unveiled along with its linear energy delivery However the HE1000 Unveiled also has its own weakness namely that under less than ideal pairing it can sound too thin lacking vocal body and its bass is far less solid and rich than the older HE1000Se The HE1000 WiFi on the other hand has been tuned to complement strengths and compensate for weaknesses presenting a well coordinated three frequency balance and a solid sound framework It feels somewhat like the sonic foundation of the HE1000Se but driven by something akin to a Topping science oriented amp though the treble character still leans closer to the Unveiled series and this is the fundamental difference from the Arya WiFi The Arya WiFi sounds softer and more viscous with more forward and prominent vocals making it better suited for those who primarily listen to pop music with a focus on vocal performance The HE1000 WiFi on the other hand retains the authoritative presence of the wired HE1000 series in classical music reproduction with abundant sub bass energy that faithfully renders the textural details of double basses while the expression of spatial reverb is exceptionally natural The reproduction of classical recordings is remarkably composed with no obvious weaknesses in horizontal width vertical height or depth while the reverb extends moderately with a fitting sense of diffusion It is fair to say that I see no signs of compromise in HIFIMAN s tuning of the HE1000 WiFi It even combines the various strengths of the older HE1000V2 HE1000Se and HE1000 Unveiled though its sonic identity is less pronounced leaning towards a safer and more versatile tuning approach This tuning direction is not surprising though After all anyone willing to spend this kind of money on a HIFIMAN headphone rather than a major Nordic brand likely has very high sound quality expectations For those who prioritise vocal intimacy and a richer atmosphere the Arya WiFi is the more characterful option
According to measurements from other media sources the frequency response curves of the HE1000 WiFi across its three operating modes are highly similar In actual listening while Bluetooth mode does show some differences in technical performance the overall tonality and energy distribution remain largely consistent with decent dynamics The differences lie mainly in treble control sound fullness and depth detail presentation As for USB mode due to cable variability it is difficult for me to make a blanket statement but the technical performance can certainly match or exceed that of WiFi mode and USB is by far the easiest to connect while both Bluetooth and WiFi modes are less efficient in terms of connection speed at least on this unit Because I have a desktop microphone setup at my desk I occasionally use the HE1000 WiFi in USB mode as a gaming headset In other aspects the HE1000 WiFi offers the longest battery life in Bluetooth mode at up to 23 hours with support for mainstream high bit rate codecs like aptX HD and LDAC In WiFi mode it lasts about 6 to 7 hours For stability reasons I strongly recommend Qobuz and Spotify users to use this headphone as it tends to be more stable than Chinese apps paired with open source DLNA protocols And if you are in a stable network environment such as when cleaning house organising chores or brewing coffee you can just set up WiFi streaming and leave your phone aside without worrying about transmission distance wall penetration or signal coverage at all

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1440" height="960" src="https://static.gothamproaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/e6aab265b6cbae00a-1440x960.jpg" alt="" 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" />

In theory adding WiFi streaming functionality to a Bluetooth headphone is not particularly difficult to implement but pushing that functionality to its limits and breaking through the previous bottlenecks of sound quality is something that HIFIMAN has genuinely achieved This is a reflection of comprehensive capability encompassing their in house Himalaya hardware solution extreme spatial stacking proficiency the supporting supply chain and manufacturing capabilities and mature driver technology none of which can be missing The HE1000 WiFi not only transcends the category of ordinary wireless headphones functioning as a streaming headphone with the capability of a compact standalone desktop unit but also maintains the dignity of a true HiFi brand in its sonic refinement without resorting to vulgar frequency boosts to appeal to the consumer market Both the Arya and HE1000 WiFi editions are a synthesis of genuine innovation and solid product substance

Source: Li Ling Jia Qi

<div class="wp-block-buttons
