Beyond its satisfying sound performance—serving as a benchmark for high‑quality hybrid (dynamic + electrostatic + balanced armature) earphones under 10,000 RMB—its exceptionally photogenic design is another major reason I frequently reach for it. When it comes to aesthetics, or design in general, this relatively new brand possesses a top‑tier level of design sensibility and attention to detail within the domestic earphone industry. Another intriguing aspect of ARTPICAL’s products is the cohesive relationship between each model’s name, appearance, and sound signature. Michael embodies a grand and magnificent nobility; Lucifer delivers overwhelming power and enveloping presence; while Blood Bathed Angel presents a precise and incisive definition of note outlines. The Blue Planet, which this article will discuss, is the debut model of the brand’s Nature series. Whether it can continue this distinctive ARTPICAL trait is exactly what we will explore in the text below, as a reference for fellow audiophiles.

The Blue Planet was first unveiled at the Beijing exhibition in 2024, nearly a year ago. However, there was a bit of a mix‑up at that time: despite the exhibition backdrop already bearing the name “Blue Planet,” the product was ultimately “banned” by the brand’s principal and designer because the engineering prototype did not meet their standards for public display. It was not until the end of the year that we saw an engineering prototype close to the final production version. Entering 2025, after several more exhibitions and further refinements, the Blue Planet was finally finalised and officially launched.

Why did it take nearly a year to finally reach the market? The moment I saw the final design of the Blue Planet and heard its finalised tuning, the reason became immediately clear: creating something truly unprecedented in the market is inevitably a process of constant refinement and even complete overhauls. First, there is the appearance. According to their designer, the initial unveiling of the Blue Planet was postponed twice simply because the design did not even meet their basic requirements. And when I heard their description before seeing the actual product, the only thought that crossed my mind was: “Is this thing even physically possible to make?”

Yet they made it. The production version of the Blue Planet is composed entirely of two primary colours—blue and white. Like the Michael, there is no clear demarcation between “faceplate” and “shell”—the earpiece feels like a seamless whole in your hand, and you cannot help but admire its design and craftsmanship as something approaching a work of art. The front face of the Blue Planet features a “stepped terrace” three‑dimensional pattern at the boundary between blue and white, which is actually inspired by the contour lines of Dufourspitze, the second‑highest peak in the Alps. On the front of each side, there is a gold and silver ARTPICAL logo respectively. Beyond the “mountain” motif, the Blue Planet also incorporates design cues representing “water” and “rift valleys.” For a closer look, I would refer you to the product images or the official product page, rather than using up space here. On the rear of the shell, there is a raised section that stands out from the surrounding material—this is a decorative piece made of lapis lazuli, which also serves to improve wearing comfort and enhance skin‑friendliness.

The Blue Planet has a relatively shallow protrusion near the ear canal, and the nozzle is quite short, so it requires longer eartips made of stable materials to achieve a comfortable and secure fit. ARTPICAL’s stock eartips and their “Slime” liquid silicone eartips both deliver a good fit. Additionally, the Softears UT titanium nozzle tips and the EarrBOND EBT METAL tips that I have on hand are a great match for this type of nozzle, offering even better sound performance and excellent comfort when paired with the Blue Planet.

In terms of packaging and accessories, the Blue Planet continues ARTPICAL’s tradition of ingenuity. The elastic loop opening mechanism, the premium-feeling box, and the carrying case made from the “same” material as the earphones are all visually striking. The stock cable of the Blue Planet is particularly worth mentioning. The moment I saw it, it reminded me of the ultra‑thin upgrade cable from Westone back in the day. The incredibly compact splitter, the conical 2‑pin connectors, and what is probably the most “compact” 4.4mm plug I have ever seen—all of it is quite eye‑opening. I never expected a 6,000+ RMB HiFi IEM to come with such a slender stock cable.
In addition, early buyers of the Blue Planet will also receive an exceptionally refined and elegant headphone stand which will be sold separately later. Unlike the black 3D‑printed stands used for the Michael and Lucifer, this one is crafted from wood and metal, with a truly premium feel. Placed on a desk, it is a work of art in its own right—no exaggeration.

Before discussing the sonic character of the Blue Planet, it is important to emphasise that this IEM is not suitable for blind purchases. Its stylistic character is so pronounced that you should only consider it after thoroughly understanding its sound and confirming that it matches your preferences. Secondly, the Blue Planet is genuinely difficult to drive—its power requirements are on par with the AK ZERO1. It needs a relatively high‑output DAP or even a portable amplifier to perform properly. Even larger dongles like the mub1 and A100 are insufficient, and smaller dongles are essentially out of the question. Therefore, those without a suitable source should approach the Blue Planet with caution and ideally audition it with their own equipment before purchasing. To ensure accurate sound descriptions, I used the Lotoo GT2, L&P E7, and even some desktop gear to drive the Blue Planet, ensuring proper pairing.
The first impression of the Blue Planet’s sound is one of “slowness”—reminiscent of the Earth’s gentle rotation and the slow, rhythmic movements of mountains and oceans. In my view, this IEM is inherently unsuited for faster genres like rock or rap, and is instead better matched with slower, more lyrical tracks, as well as classical symphonic works. I never thought I would use the phrase “heavy and powerful” to describe the sound of an earphone, but it fits the Blue Planet remarkably well. Its impressive three‑frequency performance, neutral and accurate timbre, excellent resolution, dramatic dynamics, and swift, precise transient response together paint the sonic “canvas” that the Blue Planet presents.

In terms of energy delivery, the Blue Planet is a headphone that operates on the principle of “striking only when the time is right.” This means that certain sonic elements—such as bass, dynamics, and transient response—remain relatively restrained in everyday listening, only revealing their full potential when the music truly calls for it, delivering a stunning listening experience. Take the bass, for example: in most tracks—such as faster‑paced pop songs—the Blue Planet presents a relatively lean quantity of bass with limited sub‑bass extension. For bass enthusiasts, this might seem underwhelming. However, when it comes to powerful film scores or orchestral classical pieces, the bass on the Blue Planet becomes almost lavish—not only abundant in quantity but also astonishingly deep in extension. In the midrange, as long as the track is not too fast‑paced, the Blue Planet consistently delivers a rich, dense, and texturally refined vocal and instrumental performance. The vocal imaging, though somewhat cool and slender, possesses an exceptional level of texture and density, with detail rendering that is nothing short of outstanding. That said, the Blue Planet is not forgiving of poorly recorded material or vocalists with inherent sibilance characteristics (such as a certain “auntie” figure). Unless that kind of sound is specifically to your taste, it is best to avoid such tracks. In other words, this IEM is not particularly friendly to ACG music with prominent vocal elements. In the treble region, the Blue Planet leans toward a rather neutral and revealing character—with strong brightness, excellent resolution, and extension that far surpasses its peers in the price bracket. It also preserves certain frequency peaks that are often smoothed over in other earphones, which means that the flaws in poorly recorded tracks will be laid bare when played through the Blue Planet.

So, what makes the Blue Planet sound so good?
First, its exceptionally grand soundstage and expansive spatial presentation. The Blue Planet has a natural affinity for OSTs and classical music, and with its unhurried, composed sonic character, listening to film scores like Planet Earth and Titanic becomes an utterly immersive experience. Whether it is small‑scale chamber concertos or large‑scale symphonic works, the Blue Planet’s majestic sense of scale draws you deep into the music.
Second, its outstanding dynamic and transient performance. When called upon, the Blue Planet delivers dramatic dynamic contrasts, and its seemingly “slow‑paced” character can switch to lightning‑fast transient response in an instant, capturing every instrument’s timbre and subtle sonic feedback. In this regard, I would even say it surpasses the Michael.
Third, its timbre leans toward faithful reproduction with exceptional detail retrieval. Whether it is vocal tracks with outstanding singing or instrumental performances with impressive texture and sheen, the Blue Planet delivers highly textured, detail‑rich playback. While not every track may guarantee a “pleasant” listening experience, this emphasis on textural fidelity ensures the most authentic presentation possible.

The Blue Planet is truly a very special IEM. Although you can probably tell from this article that I am not blindly recommending it, I still do not want to hide my genuine appreciation for it. Even if it is difficult to drive, picky about sources, and even selective about music genres, its sonic character really resonates with a particular segment of listeners. If you happen to like its sound, chances are you will also be drawn to its exquisite design and outstanding build quality.
