Yet despite the arduous road, someone has to try—using the earhook form to house the battery, audio framework, and circuitry, and using an interchangeable pin design to remain compatible with detachable-cable earphones of different sockets. This should be the best solution currently available that balances size, convenience, cost, connection efficiency, and sound quality.
But unlike all-in-one true wireless earphones or even Bluetooth over-ear headphones, the latter often cater to mass consumer needs; even non-audiophiles may want to buy a convenient, good-sounding wireless headphone. The “true wireless earhook,” however, is a product form exclusive to “earphone audiophiles”—to borrow an old advertising slogan, it is “born for earphone audiophiles.”

MOONDROP’s first-generation EVO was a bold attempt, earning praise from audiophiles for its relatively high output power and good sound quality. However, compared with the EVO II we are discussing today, it indeed falls short in terms of design rationality, practicality, and product maturity. Therefore, this article does not intend to compare the EVO II with the first generation; instead, it approaches the EVO II as an entirely new product and helps fellow audiophiles get to know it.

Different from ordinary TWS true wireless earphones, where everyone is trying to make the charging case smaller and more refined, MOONDROP’s EVO II goes the opposite way—its “enormous” volume is enough to leave users stunned on the spot. The outdoor-style rugged carrying case is also very eye-catching in appearance. According to the founder of MOONDROP’s own explanation, the case was made large to provide a more spacious interior, so that audiophiles can use the EVO II to pair with their high-end in-ear monitors, even custom-molded earphones. I personally tested over twenty earphones (including two custom-molded ones), and indeed every single one could be smoothly installed, stored in the case, and have the lid closed. The inspiration for this exterior design comes from the fact that many high-end earphone users like to use Pelican waterproof cases to store and carry their earphones—a hard shell plus a soft lining not only prevents daily bumps and drops but also provides waterproof and dustproof effects. Therefore, the EVO II directly made its case look like a rugged carrying case. After all, for users of flagship earphones, the price of the earphone itself can buy dozens of EVO IIs; a bump, dirt, or water damage would cause no small distress.

The EVO II is simple to use: detach the cable from your detachable-cable earphones, connect them directly to the EVO II’s 0.78mm 2-pin connectors, and they are instantly transformed into HiFi-grade true wireless earphones. By the way, the earhook is of a modular, detachable design; MOONDROP has officially stated that it will later release earhooks with MMCX and FitEar connectors separately to accommodate more earphone sockets. Unlike similar products from iFi and FiiO, the EVO II’s earhook stores in a reversed “flat-lying” manner with the inner side facing up. In this position, the charging contacts on the earhook align with the corresponding points in the charging case and charge. The back of the earphone unit—now facing upward—rests on a layer of felt that secures the unit and prevents wear; in the upper lid of the charging case, at the positions corresponding to the earphone units, thicker foam serves the same purpose. At the same time, the upper lid has a raised section corresponding to the earhook area, which firmly presses down on the earhook and earphones when the lid is closed, preventing the earphones from shifting and losing their charging position. In addition, because the EVO II’s charging case itself is waterproof, dustproof, and pressure-resistant, MOONDROP simply placed the USB-C charging port inside the case, located slightly below the middle between the two earhooks. In other words, charging the EVO II’s case requires opening it to plug in the cable. The advantage is that charging does not compromise the case’s rugged protection; the downside is that it is slightly inconvenient.

As a true wireless Bluetooth earhook priced at 499 RMB, the EVO II is destined not to be perfect—but if you are mentally prepared for that, it will most likely deliver a pleasant surprise. Its powerful output can drive a wide range of in-ear monitors, even flagship hybrid-driver earphones in the five-figure range, with impressive results. The founder of MOONDROP’s remark that it can “drive flagship custom IEMs” is not just talk. With this level of sound quality, audiophiles who genuinely want to free their high-end in-ear monitors from the shackles of cables will give the EVO II extremely high praise for its value—or rather, its “sound-to-price ratio.” After all, when seeking the best possible sound quality, one can rely on a wired plus DAP setup; and when out and about and wanting to enjoy a “familiar sound,” the EVO II makes it possible—convenient and easy to switch between the two.

Considering both output power and power consumption, MOONDROP has replaced the traditional “decoding + amplification” chip architecture in the EVO II with a “digital amplifier,” and combined it with a custom Bluetooth main control chip, the MOONDROP TWS-01. This ensures relatively high output power while maintaining what can only be called “insane” battery life for a true wireless Bluetooth earphone—a theoretical 15 hours of playback on a single charge (based on AAC; this will be correspondingly reduced when using high-bitrate Bluetooth codecs). In addition, because the EVO II’s supported LHDC-V Bluetooth codec allows you to listen with high-priced flagship in-ear monitors, its advantages over LDAC in terms of information density and detail presentation are obvious. If sound quality is your top priority, it is recommended that you switch to LHDC; if you have higher demands for connection speed, latency, and interference resistance, then the LC3 mode is recommended. Furthermore, for gamers, the EVO II also offers a mature low-latency mode, delivering ultra-low latency performance at the 60ms level.

In terms of sound, if the EVO II were priced at 4,999 RMB, I might have to say that when paired with flagship earphones, its sound quality still falls short of wired connections, with audible differences in three-frequency performance and detail presentation, and so on. But MOONDROP set its official price at 499 RMB, which instantly left me “speechless.” After all, a flagship earphone’s cable plus a decent DAP would cost at least ten to twenty times the EVO II. To be honest, I do not recommend using the EVO II to directly replace your cables and DAP. Instead, treat it as a “backup option” when you go out—trading a small amount of sound quality for the enormous convenience of wireless operation and not having to carry a DAP.

The EVO II’s own driving power far exceeded my expectations. Among the high-end earphones I commonly use, it can basically drive the Aidashan Skyline, Shuoer Sonata, and OA Kaiyang well, while MOONDROP’s own models such as Soul, AA24, AA12, and LIUXING are even easier to handle with ease. The vast majority of in-ear monitors I have on hand can achieve sufficient fullness on the EVO II, and the soundstage is not an issue at all. MOONDROP frequently uses the Kadenz—a thousand-yuan benchmark single-dynamic IEM—as an example pairing in the EVO II’s promotional materials, because this true wireless earhook can fully bring out the latter’s sound performance. So there is basically no need to worry about the EVO II’s driving power.

In terms of style, the EVO II itself follows a thick, balanced, and steady tuning path. Its tonality is relatively neutral and faithful, making it suitable for pairing with a variety of different earphones to listen to music. It not only provides sufficient technical performance and driving power support, but also allows the earphones to fully express their own sonic characteristics and strengths. In terms of the three frequency ranges, the EVO II offers an even energy distribution and ample harmonics and reverb to create an appropriate musical atmosphere. Its bass quantity is moderate, with excellent elasticity and sub-bass extension, and a strong sense of presence; the midrange is thick and delicate, with full-bodied imaging that is not overly fat, and a sense of distance that is just right—vocals are not sycophantically close, and the tonality suits both male and female voices; the treble extension is beautiful and transparent, with low harshness, decent resolution, and a clear sense of line that is not abnormally prominent. It is evident that the treble, while pursuing tonal thickness and power, maximizes listenability and reduces the chance of failure when paired with earphones that have more unusual sound signatures. The EVO II’s soundstage is relatively open, with a scientifically healthy three-axis proportion, and there is no flat or narrow listening sensation; within a stage-like sonic space, layering is distinct and resolution is excellent. Although its information density, dynamics, and transient performance cannot compare with high-end players, it excels in completeness and sense of scale, creating a hardware foundation that does not hold back and is sufficient for high-end earphones to unleash their potential.

Although I tried no fewer than twenty earphones of different price points and driver types while reviewing the EVO II, I do not intend to go through the sound performance of each specific pairing one by one here. The reason is simple: the EVO II is essentially a “source” device, and its own technical performance and tonal character are quite stable—there is no obvious fluctuation, nor does it change noticeably depending on which earphone it is paired with. Thanks to its thick, neutral, and faithful sound characteristics and ample driving power (the app also offers three adjustable gain levels to match earphones of different impedance and sensitivity), the EVO II’s “comfort zone” is pairing with earphones under 5,000 RMB. Within this range, the vast majority of earphones can achieve a good listening experience and perform at their proper technical level. Beyond that, it depends on the user’s own listening preferences and requires case-by-case analysis. During this period of pairing and auditioning, I personally found that several earphones delivered outstanding sound performance when paired with the EVO II, including the MOONDROP Kadenz and AA24, the Shanling Tree of Life, the Kinera Mimir, the Softears EDGE and RSV2, the Shuoer Sonata, and the Aidashan Skyline.

Finally, a few more highlights in terms of user experience. First, as a Bluetooth audio product that primarily relies on portable smart devices, the EVO II supports gain adjustment, Bluetooth mode switching, and custom touch controls via the MOONDROP app. MOONDROP’s signature online interactive DSP is, of course, not absent, and it supports a 10-band professional parametric equalizer—if you are not 100% satisfied with how your earphones sound with the EVO II, you can use this feature to fine-tune the sound. Second, the EVO II is very comfortable to wear. It is not heavy, and the earhook section is rounded, free of sharp edges, and made from skin-friendly materials. As long as the insertion angle of the earphones themselves is not too extreme, it can be worn comfortably for long periods. Finally, although it is an auxiliary feature, the EVO II has a dual-microphone array on each side, and its call quality, call noise reduction, and stability rank among the best among TWS products under 1,000 RMB.

Finally, a few more highlights in terms of user experience. Second, the EVO II is very comfortable to wear. It is not heavy, and the earhook section is rounded, free of sharp edges, and made from skin-friendly materials. As long as the insertion angle of the earphones themselves is not too extreme, it can be worn comfortably for long periods.
