To get straight to the point the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one The most critical aspect of this device is that it knows exactly what it wants and what it does not want Or to put it differently it is a device that MOONDROP launched after thoroughly understanding what its target customers are looking for in a piece of equipment using an exceptionally precise product positioning as its anchor Its approach to trade offs including the measure of those trade offs is not just clear it is practically ingenious
Many in the industry know that MOONDROP is a brand that is willing to invest heavily in its products And this time MOONDROP chose to partner with SMSL a brand in the source device space that has long been known for solid cost performance and honest pricing So initially I also thought this would be a device that tries to do everything well and cover all bases But I also kept telling myself that a device priced at 2999 RMB cannot be expected to excel in every aspect if it tries to do too much So the key to something like this is knowing what to prioritise and what to sacrifice And the premise of making those choices is how well you understand your target customers

Starting with the exterior There is a common mindset in the audio industry that a device which clearly invests heavily in its build quality will have a heavier chassis and a heavier transformer making it weigh more than it looks However the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one at 2kg is merely average for its size The front panel is quite fresh featuring a laser engraved image of MOONDROP Yuki which gives this device a unique identity right away But after actually handling it the CNC machined aviation aluminium with brushed metal finish feels just passable in terms of texture The finishing is not particularly refined and the volume knob is on the loose side Keep in mind dear readers that this exterior which looks cute at first glance but feels mediocre upon touching is itself a trade off A clever design choice that gives more weight to visual appeal over tactile feel allowing savings to be made elsewhere
What further reveals the philosophy of saving where possible is the rear panel It has XLR and RCA inputs and outputs USB and even an independent grounding terminal But both coaxial and optical inputs are absent which I find quite unusual After a moment of reflection however I think I understand For most users coaxial and optical are more commonly used when outputting from a desktop CD player For someone like me with a full setup at home I would likely go through a separate DAC and feed the analogue signal via XLR On the other hand if a younger user does not have much gear at home they would probably just use USB for simplicity whether from a computer tablet or phone In that sense for a device positioned like this skipping coaxial and optical does make sense Still I personally think Bluetooth would have been a nice addition though of course adding Bluetooth and streaming would involve additional design changes and costs

So essentially the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one is designed to be used in two main ways First USB direct digital input Second using another source and feeding an analogue signal via XLR or RCA for instance with MOONDROP CD Player In both cases the primary use is direct headphone driving with the option to use it as a preamp for speakers In terms of system capability and use case scenarios it stands apart from many devices that try to offer every possible input at a low price This device is doing subtraction Or to put it another way it is putting the good steel where it counts most for its precisely defined target use case
So then just how sharp is this blade

If you are watching this and your first impression when driving a full sized headphone with the DHA15 is that the sound seems merely average please hold on The gain on this unit is set to low by default and I am quite certain that driving full sized headphones requires switching to high gain mode This is not to say that the amplifier is underpowered On the contrary its power output is quite impressive for its price point It is just that the low gain setting appears to have been tuned very gently for IEMs to prevent many earphones from being overdriven right out of the gate The operation logic is straightforward and simple After switching the gain you will experience something that completely exceeds expectations
Having personally listened to quite a few DAC Amp all in ones at this 3000 yuan price point from various brands I did have a certain expectation in mind Given my understanding of both MOONDROP and SMSL I initially thought as long as the overall sound framework is well structured and open that would be enough I did not expect the overall scale to be particularly large but I was also fairly sure it would not feel cramped The foundation should lean towards clean with decent separation and better control in the mid to upper treble That was roughly what I had in mind was it not
All of that turned out to be accurate but the soundstage of the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one is actually about half a size larger than I had anticipated This is a device that presents a rather bold sense of scale in both soundstage and frequency response for its price point The stage is definitely large and the background is relatively clean and transparent Some DAC Amp all in ones at this price point from a few years ago did have somewhat dirty backgrounds but here it is handled with clarity and refinement In terms of separation it would not be an exaggeration to say that the DHA15 is particularly outstanding in the 3000 yuan bracket The information delivery is impressive with clear definition of note outlines and the details are refined and delicate yet straightforward without excessive embellishment All of these aspects met my expectations and assumptions before listening
But then came the part that exceeded expectations To put it bluntly I really did not expect the bass on this device to be this solid and the midrange to be unexpectedly substantial as well Although it is not a thick sounding unit the lower midrange and bass region are remarkably stable and dense This lower midrange and bass carry a level of authority that transcends its price point This does not just provide a sufficient sense of stability and grounding more importantly it prevents the DHA15 from being easily categorised as digital sounding It does not fall into the harsh or overly thin category Instead it suddenly becomes a far more versatile performer

Because at this price point let us be realistic you basically have three paths to choose from The first is playing it safe across the board without making any mistakes but without excelling in any area either The second is leaning towards a warmer more analogue flavoured sound with some warmth and smoothness but at the cost of soundstage scale background cleanliness resolution and definition of note outlines The third path is pushing signal to noise ratio and dynamic range to the limit and focusing purely on technical performance But pushing this path to the extreme can also become a dead end because excessive sacrifice of thickness and musicality can easily ruin long term listenability
With the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one the dual CS43198 DACs achieve an impressive 131dB in both dynamic range and signal to noise ratio Combined with 15W x 2 output power at first glance it is easy to assume this is just another resolution focused device that goes all in on separation But upon listening it turns out to be a unit with a remarkably composed sonic character It does not take the warm and smooth route nor does it overemphasise elasticity softness roundness or sheen Its presentation is indeed relatively direct and technically inclined but it is anchored by a sufficiently solid lower midrange and bass foundation paired with a tempo that is neither rushed nor sluggish This creates a composed and well grounded sense of authority Combined with its already excellent refinement and transparency it sounds it almost sounds genuinely beautiful
This kind of beauty is not the fleshy warm and relaxed character typical of tube amps nor does it achieve the extreme refinement or elegance of high end solid state amplifiers But it already combines brilliant detail a very comfortable listening experience and excellent dynamic control And these three qualities at this price point for a DAC Amp all in one should theoretically be an impossible triangle Even for a pure headphone amplifier at this price point achieving all three simultaneously would normally be considered unrealistic

Moreover the idea that the source should remain neutral while the earphones handle the seasoning is a mainstream and scientifically sound approach to system matching Take the combination of the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one with the MOONDROP Paradise 2 for example The Paradise 2 is already a highly competitive model in its price range known for its balance agility and responsiveness When paired together the DHA15 ensures that the full soundstage capability of the Paradise 2 is not compromised delivering bass that is full and dynamic a midrange with solid definition and treble that opens up freely The level of engagement is impressive with ample reverb while still maintaining a basic sense of warmth and thickness If the DHA15 failed to preserve that warmth and thickness the overall listenability of this pairing would take a significant hit But since it holds its ground and retains those qualities the resulting sound achieves both vitality and stability making it versatile enough to handle a wide range of music genres
Switching to the MOONDROP Castle in the Sky the sound becomes rounder and more expansive with an elegant and refined character As we just discussed the earphones are responsible for the tonal seasoning If you felt the previous pairing was a bit too direct and lacking in beauty then here the beauty arrives The treble becomes more alluring the midrange softer and the bass gentler

I also paired the DHA15 with other planar headphones including the HIFIMAN HE1000U and Fosi i5 and the conclusion is that none of them performed poorly While I cannot guarantee that these pairings bring out the absolute best or most perfectly matched performance from each headphone they all deliver a result well above the passing mark The underlying reason is that the sonic foundation of the DHA15 whether used with an external DAC or handling the entire DAC amplification chain via USB is consistently solid yet composed clean refined and transparent It also offers a more complete soundstage framework and refined detail than most competitors at the same price point with excellent dynamic control and transient response This is a technically oriented sound that is agile yet retains a solid musical foundation giving it very broad theoretical compatibility especially given its impressive power output
Experienced audiophiles reading my comments above might wonder whether pairing this sonic foundation with dynamic headphones could be even more complementary than with planars I actually tried it with the Austrian Audio The Composer and the Sennheiser HD660S2 The former seemed to have some conflicts in soundstage construction and the tonal character felt slightly odd with certain genres which is understandable given that Austrian headphones from AKG to Austrian Audio have always been rather picky about amplifier pairing The pairing with the Sennheiser HD660S2 on the other hand was quite satisfying with controlled and well behaved dynamics complementary density and fullness solid imaging and natural harmonics Pairing it with the MOONDROP Horizon dynamic over ear headphone also resulted in a harmonious and relaxed performance In practice the DHA15 can easily handle most dynamic headphones achieving good synergy

To summarise the MOONDROP DHA15 DAC Amp all in one is a device that knows exactly what it wants Within the limited budget of the 3000 yuan price point it makes very clear and targeted trade offs The build quality is average and some inputs are missing but the cost saved has all been channelled into the DAC and amplification sections In particular the amplifier performance is actually more formidable than many pure amplifiers at the same price point When driving headphones directly its technical capability is strong enough to punch above its weight Compare transparency or refinement and it truly can compete at a higher tier Even speaking with my own slightly HUFI leaning personal preferences I still find its tuning sufficiently successful and genuinely enjoyable to listen to
For those on a tighter budget who are looking to keep the total cost of source and headphones within the five to eight thousand yuan range this is a conscientious and excellent device that should not be missed
